The turnover Is not out of line with other districts and is ap proximately the same as a year ago, said Supt. Charles Schmidt. Colbert, Nelscott; Mrs. Gill Gooding, Miss Billie Jean Pierce and Mrs. Bon nie B. Sanders, all of Salem, for elementary work; Mrs. Dorothy Patch, Salem senior high, and Adrian C. Miller, Lebanon, junior high. A 1957-58 calendar year was adopted. It calls the beginning of school Sept. 9 and a June 3 end ing. The Christmas holiday vaca tion will begin Dec. 23 and end Jan. 2. Spring vacation will in clude the March 10-14 period. Derderian, na tional commandant of the Marine Corps league. Derderian will be here for conferences with city, state and league officials and will meet with , the league leaders at 4 o'clock at the Marion hotel. HERE IN THE HOMETOWN Student Tour to Form Here The American Field service of New York City has designated Sa lem as one point of origin for for eign students who will be taken on a three weeks tour of the United States prior to their departure for home next June. As one of the conditions of the designation, Salem folk .will agree to house approximately 32 stu dents during their one-night stay here. They would be assembled here from the Pacific "Northwest. Loren Mort, assistant principal of Leslie junior high, who has been interested in the American Field service, explained the offer of the New York office during Thursday's luncheon of the Salem Lions club. The American Field service makes all arrangements for bring ing foreign students to this country for a year's study on the high school level. Organizations like the Lions club agree to give financial assistance while some family pro vides a home during the student's stay. As a part of the luncheon pro gram, Carl Gunnarson, business manager of the Salem Senators, spoke briefly concerning the base ball situation on the local level. Woman Retires Mrs, Anna M. She was first employed by the department Oct. S, 1948. Mrs. Greene and her husband, Charles E. Greene, a painter, have six children and 19 grandchildren living in Oregon and Idaho. Their youngest son, Larry, is in the Mt. Angel seminary. The Greenes have lived in Salem for about 20 years. Marriage Rate Jumps With the approach of spring, there appears to be more interest in marriage on the part of the younger generation, judging by records at the county clerk's of fice. Forty-two young couples applied for licenses during February, two less than was the case for the same month a year ago. However, the total was 11 more than the 33 applications which went into the records during January. Judge Orders Terrault Case Investigation Having pleaded guilty to a charge of taking and using an automobile without consent of the owner, a pre-scntcncn investiga tion was ordered Thursday by Cir cuit Judge George R. Duncan in the case of Donald L. Terrault of Brooks. Terrault was arrested last Jan uary upon the complaint of a Salem woman. - Joseph Eugene Barbara, Silver ton, entered a not guilty plea to a charge of obtaining money by false pretenses. No time for his trial has been set. Barbara is ac cused of passing a $20 check at a Salem store. i Taken under advisement was the motion by Elmer Walls, Peoria, 111., for a new trial or a judgment in his favor.
