Capital Journal, Salem, Ore., Tugs., Feb. 19, 1957 Frog in Throat Is No Fun, But Salem Couple Has One in Sleep Having a "frog in your throat is bad enough but hav ing a frog in your sleep is even worse. At least that's the way the L.. M. Kimmerling family, 1155 Oxford St., feels about it. And they should know they have a frog in their sleep. The oversized croaker moved under their house about two weeks ago and seems to enjoy spending the night singing (?) a resounding love song, the Kimmerlings said. It's a little difficult to sleep through it, to say the least. And efforts to get rid of it have been to no avail. Man euvering room under the house is limited for people-type creatures although ample for frog-type critters. Oh, well, the Kimmerlings hope, maybe if his love song goes unanswered, the noisome creature will take off soon for greener pastures. On the other hand, maybe his mating call will attract another. And if spring comes, can a passel of young croakers be far behind? Anybody want to buy a good home cheap? MARKET QUOTATIONS Navy Planes Rack Up Hits On Lighthouse POINT LOOKOUT, Md. Ifl Three Navy atlock bombers, con ducting firins practice alter dusk Monday night, apparently over shot their target and scored hits on a Coast Guard lighthouse here. The lighthouse is located on the southernmost tip of Maryland's western shore. The firing was hc in? conducted in Chesapeake Bay off Bloodsworlh Island, often used by the Navy for shooting and bombing practice. A Const Guard spokesman said two men stationed at the light house received minor scratches. He said he was told by those on duty Hint the target in the bay was in line with the lighthouse. Several missiles from the planes apparently went over the target, ricocheted on the water and struck the lighthouse. Cmdr. William Pack, command ing officer of squadron VIAWKI3, said at Atlantic City, the planes Involved were part of his unit. "These aircraft were on a sched uled routine rocket training flight and had training rockets aboard," Pack said. OregonBirlh Rale Sags to 10-Year Low POI1TLAND W Oregon's birth rale dropped to a 10-year low in 1!I5G while children born to un married mothers hit an all-time high, the slate Board of Health said Monday. The hoard said there were 37, 9llii Oregon births, a .11 per cent drop from the 311,340 children horn in the slate during 1U55. It was the fourth slroight year the rate has declined. A record 994 illigitimalc chil dren were horn, hut the board said Oregon's rale in this cate gory is still far below the national average. Labor Council To Oppose Key District Move PORTLAND Un - Tlio Portland Central Labor Council voted Mon day night to oppose the so-called key district school bill now before the Oregon Legislature. trovcrslal measuro as "unsound in principle" and a throat to the Portland srhool district. The Teachers Union local introduced the resolution which described Hie bill as "unsound in principle be cause it is nn effort to equalize taxes for the support of the schools in all parts of the slate rather Mian nn effort to equalize the educational opportunities for the children of Oregon." The bill, the resolution said, would encourage uneconomical school districts to operate on an unsound financial basis rather than "encourage these school dis tricts to reorganize and lo consoli date on a sound financial basis." Lane Division Bill Submitted A bill to divide Lane County into five subdislricts for election of stale representatives was intro duced in the House Tuesday by Reps. Keith D, Skclton D, Eu gene, and Richard Kymann (D), Mohawk. Knch subdistrict would elect one rcnresentalivc. A bill to .subdistrict the county was Introduced in 1955, but died because the Lane County delega tion opposed It. That hill would have divided the county into two suhdistricts, with two elected from Hie Eugene area and three from the rest of the county. Judge Frees Man Held in Alimony Lag NEW YORK Wi-A judge savs it's "cruel and inhuman" to keep a man in jail for 16 months for failure to make back alimony pay ments to his ex-wife. This brought freedom yeslerdav lo 52-year-old William Singer, who was jailed Oct. 25, 1955, on the complaint of his former wife An na. She obtained a contempt of court citation against him for $1,400 in alimony arrears. In ordering Singer freed, Slalo Supreme Court Justice Owen Mc Givcrn said it was pointless to keep a man in jail so long in such a case. "Prolonged imprisonilient for other than criminal acts has long been abhorrent lo our so ciety," the judge declared. The judge told Singer he must start paying the original court-ordered payments of $12 weekly lo his ex-wife. A nominal $4 pay ment, the judge ruled, will lake care of the arrears because Singer already has paid the price in jail time. AWOL Soldiers Picked up Here Two Ft.
