Two hundred thousand acres of land arc under irrigation, the water bringing a dramatic example of agricultural growth. Before irri gation, Malheur's economy was ail beef cattle and hay. Now it is a broadly diversified agriculture with a 31 million dollar income last year. Noteworthy In Malheur County is the Ontario livestock auction, a 12 million dollar business; food processing; and meat packing. Malheur is going against the tide in one respect. It is a county of small (arms and there arc more farms now than there were when the 1950 census was taken. Even greater agricultural pro- auction can Dc looked lor. Baker County There has been trouble here and a falling off in agriculture, but that has been checked. The situation now is stable and the possibility of irri galion offers hope for a promis ing luturc. The farm income is 11 million dollars a year with 8 of that from livestock. There arc good opportunities for impounding water for irrigation and at the same lime for checking floods which can bring a strong upturn 111 iurm crops. Lumbering Growth Lumbering has had a good growth in Baker County in. late years and an expected Increase in the allowable cut on the Whit man National Forest, plus new access roads, will help this fur- tncr. Mining, once a great industry. still has its important side in Bak er County but it has changed. Once it was gold. Now the import ant mining industry is lime. A new plant to burn high chemical grade lime is being built at Baker. The quest for various minerals is being stepped up in the county to determine whether those known to exist arc present in commercial quantities. Union County As in Baker, Union County needs dams both for flood control and for irriga tion. However, the most likely ir rigation rivers promise high cost reclamation so the immediate likelihood is for some channel straightening to check floods, and no important irrigation dams. Al though irrigation would help the agricultural outlook the county is doing well. A more diversified farm picture is developing with attention to grass seeds especially noiiccunic. me county s agricul tural income of around 11 million dollars a year has wheat as its No. 1 factor some 2Vi million dol lars and seed crops now come in second place ahead of beef cattle, which themselves account for more than a million dollars in in come. There Is a healthy lumber in dustry in Union County with Mt. Emily Lumber Co. a major fac tor with what seems to be a solid future. Movie Scenery Rut one of the most hopeful fields for future prosperity lies in the incomparable scenery of Un ion and the county for which it is the gateway, Wallowa. A movie company which filmed "Pillnrd in the Sky" in Union county left be hind some three quarters of a mil lion dollars! And there is a lot more movie scenery around. Umatilla County This conn-1 ty produces one per cent of all the wheal grown in the United Stales and yet in dollar volume lum bering runs right side-by-sidc with agriciilliirc. Although wheat is big, it is only one part of the di versified picture. The county look a severe loss in the VXtH freeze and it's not yet certain what recovery Will be made from it. The crop of prunes, apples, cherries and peaches was worth $1,708.0011 ill 1055 nnd brought only $1107 last year! This orchard tree kill has brought hardships but the economy as n whole is overcoming that and looks good for the future. There is n start being made on cattle feeding, which could become Im portant. The county is producing an increasing amount of corn nnd there is talk of stepping up swine production. Meat animals, wool, turkeys all arc major income items. Full utilization of wood had some of its pioneering applica tions in Umatilla County nnd such large operations as Harris Pine Mills, Pilot Hock Lumber Co. and U. S. tiypsum's hnrtlhonrd plant have profiled from this. Privately owned timber stands arc being de pleted by the several small oper ators and the annual cut in the county may, in later years, be reduced by as much as a halt. However there arc large stands 111 the hands of big operators nnd federal timber is available. Morrow County This is a wheal county. It is well served by the Union Pacific's branch and main line: has seen a start made mi an Improved highway into the Blue Mountains from Heppner to Spiny; and hist year saw more than a million bushels of wheat delivered to the barge dock at the site of the old Patterson Kerry. Three fourths of Its 12 million dol lar (arm income is from wheat, barley nnd hay. The average sire of n Morrow County farm Is 2,112 neres nnd the county's total population is lilt drr 50110. In the northern part of the coun ty melons have come into some prominence and last year there wa n successful potato growing venture Hut the itiimrtant new thing is Ihe projected John Day Dam. II will flood out some good land and force the community of Boardmnn to move. To offset this, the best industrial sites behind Ihe dam will be la Morrow County. 1 I pji - ow, cousin A J Ksoeue tot. went li twankS Ym whjn cofteiTS P'miohty neabI MiTwelTtixsf ys S 4TEVI6 B, I'M V WHAT. tirTCN?
