SBC to Hear Brenner's Baseball Tales Tonight Manager Was' Fullback as Frosh By A. C. JONES Capital Journal Sports Edllor Bill Brenner, new manager of the Salem Senators, will "tell some stories" about baseball to night when he speaks to the Salem Breakfast club at the Senator hotel. The 36-year-old, congenial gen eral manager has been around the baseball scene since 1939 and has the stories to tell after rubbing el bows and bats with characters in the Coast league, and Western In ternational, His business manager, Carl Gun- narson, is to appear with him on the 7 o clock smorgasbord dinner program but may have to return to Seattle today on private busi ness matters. lAst His Fast Ball Brenner, loth individual to man age the Senators since 1940, has settled down here already with his wife, Nancy, at 742 Red Hill Drive, and their two sons Bill, 5vi years old, and Doug, eight months old yesterday. Brenner's professional baseball career from 1939 to 1952 found him catching, even though he had been a pitcher and all-around player at Olympia, Wash., high school. As a prepster he says he had a fast ball but "now 1 couldn't throw a ball through a pane of glass." H was as manager at Lewiston in 1952 that his knucklcball know ledge was put to advantage. About two hours before the opening game he decided he would pitch because his hurling staff was weak. "I did all right but I didn't feel so good the next day," Brenner conlidcd. Won 64 In 3 Seasons In the three seasons in the old Class A WIL, Brenner totaled 64 wins and 31 losses. As a hitler he added his talents, balling .304 in 1952, .294 in 1953 and .337 in 1954 as Vancouver manager when his team won the pennant. I lie Salon manager s abilities will be available for the Senators this summer, beginning at spring training at Wasco, Calif., April 5. Brenner had football talents, loo, which he gave up when he .signed a pro bascahll contract. He was a 190-pound fullback In high school and as a lrcshmnn at Uni versity of Oregon played more minutes than anv other Duckling. Ho was signed by Hollywood in 1939 and sent to Belllngham to catch, a Iradc he pursued as the years rolled hy with Tacoma, Los Angeles, back to Vancouver, to Yakima, Lewiston, Vancouver and Seattle. Wanted Gunnarson Brenner knew Gunnarson when the latter was a nifty lefly for the Senators in 1946. "1 traded Salem out of him as soon as I could and brought him to Vancouver with me."
