NOW COMB OM,KID.. .j WHAT 9 VEAH, ITS STIX MOT BUSINESS MIRROR Some Stocks Hit New Highs As Index Heads for Cellar liy SAM DAWSON NEW Y0I1K m-0nc of the fas cinating things about the stock market is that even on days when the price index is heading for the cellar there always are some slocks making new highs. And in years like 1956 when the overages end up pretty much whore they started there will be stocks making H3 much as 300 per cent gains in price and others slip ping by as much as 85 per cent. The trick is to do noic to guess ahead of time which stock is go ing to 'do which. Few newspaper men We know have that knack. But hindsight can bo interesting and perhaps helpful. Interior Urges Halt to Quick Klamath Sale WASHINGTON uB-Tho Interior Department asked Congress Tues day to prevent a forced quick sole of Klamath Indian timber hold ings In Oregon which might glut the market. A law terminating federal ward ship over the Klamath tribe which was passed in 1954 requires that sufficient nmounls ol niDni tim ber lands bo sold by August. IMS', to pay off withdrawing members of the tribe in cash. Asst. Secy, of Interior Hatfield Chilson told the House Indian Affairs Subcommittee that sur veys indicate that up to 70 per cent and perhaps more of the Klamalhs may want to withdraw from the tribe and demand to have sufficient timber sold lo give them their share of tribal prop erly. Chilson urged the committee lo approve an amendment lo the Klamath freedom law lo give the government until 19111 lo sell the Indian timber lands. -"If 70 per cent of the members elect to withdraw from the tribe, about the same proportion nf the limber will need to lie sold," Chil son said. . . "This might result in offering as much ns three billion board feet for sale during a period of one lo three years." More lime is needed, he said, to avoid "glutting Ihe market." The tribal timber lands nre eiilimated to cnnlain 7'I5.";H) acres, nntl In comprise 90 per cent of the value of Ihe tribal assets. The forests are mainly of pundernsa pine. Chilson also proposed an amend ment to the Klamath law to re quire the government to pay up In $1,100,011(1 in costs of terminat ing federal wardship over the Indians. The healing on proposed changes in the Klamath law will continue Tuesday. Wilson Hark on Jolt EUGENE w Vnivcrsilv of Oregon President (). Meredith . nuson, wnn nan an emergency appendectomy two weeks ago. relumed to his office Monday. Noles on , "Hp so much in sn few wot adaplcu to TV commercial." Ore., Tues'., Feb". 12, 1957 By Ketcham Lukens Steel had the biggest percentage of rise in 1956 303.3 per cent. Consolidated Retail Stores had the largest percentage drop tlo.fi per cent. The Exchange, magazine of the New York Stock Exchange, names today 20 stocks that rose the most percentagewise and the 20 that dropped the most. Then it plays the old game of seeing how an investor would have fared if bis foresight were as good as his hind sight. If at the end of 1955 he had bought 10 shares of each of Ihe 20 stocks that scored the largest percentage price advances 1956, it would have cost him about $11,000. In 12 months the value of his stocks would have risen lo around $19,600, a gain of 78 per cent. If another investor had bought 10 shares each of Ihe 20 common stocks that bad the poorest show ing percentagewise last year, it would have cost him $4,191 at the end of 1955, At the end of 1950 he could havo sold them for $2, 164, a drop of 48 per cent In mar ket value. In neither case arc commissions and taxes included in the figuring.
