, Salem, Oregon, Saturday, February 9, 1957 THE CAPITAL" JOURNAL' Section' 2 Page 8 Famous Miler To Speak Here Sunday Night Dr. Glenn Cunningham Will Give Talk- at First Christian First Christian church will have as guest speaker, 7:30 p.m. Sun day, the famous track star, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, known to mil lions ot Americans as the holder of the world record for the indoor mile, four minutes, -4.4 seconds. He established it at Dartmouth college in 1938, a record which still stands. - The track record of Dr. Cunning ham is even more spectacular in view of his incredible recovery from a boyhood disaster. Doctors advised that both of his legs should be amputated, following a blazing school fire in which Glenn was severely burned on both legs while altempting to rescue his brother Floxd. His parents decided against am putation; however, and after many very painful months of massaging and exercise he learned to walk again, and finally was able to run. The speaking tour of Dr. Cun ningham to the schools and church es of Oregon is being arranged by the Oregon Temperance league in conjunction with the National Tem perance league. Race Relations Sunday Topic "Race Relations" will be fea tured Sunday in the First Congre gational church at 11 o'clock. Par ticipating in a choral reading titled "And No One Asked" will be Daisy Lim, Jim Sato, Barbara Smith, Phil Henderson and Lillie Kealoha, all of Willamette Univer sity. Dr. Keiser will preach on "The Roots and Fruits of Preju dice." At 9:30 a.m.; the adult class will view and discuss the sound film "The Barrier," a documentary on integrated housing. The Pilgrim fellowship will see the same film at its meeting in the parsonage at 7 p.m. Congregational youth from two Salem churches will be attending a state-wide Congregational Youth conference at the First Congrega tional church in Portland this week end. Participating from Knight Memorial church are Tom Fisk, Terisha Perrin, Shirley Hunter and Ernest Ferguson, and from the First Congregational church are Louise Laws, Ed Martin, John Harvey. Miss Kayrene Butler, adviser for first church and' Miss Dorene Cavander, adviser for Knight me morial, will be with them. Their get-acquainted party will follow a western round-up theme and will be led by the Salem group, as sisted by Rev. and Mrs. Julian Keiser, Mr. and Mrs. James Wiles and Mrs. Lynn Hammerstad. Lutheran Church To Hear Speech By Mrs. Fischer Mrs. William Fischer of St. John's Lutheran church, will be one of the guest speakers at the Walther League banquet to be held at Calvary Lutheran church, Port land, Saturday night. The banquet will be a feature of the two-day Walther League conference of the Oregon district. Mrs. Fischer's topic will be "Walther Leaguers, Today. Tomorrow Where?" A number of St. John's Walther Leaguers will attend the Portland convention. Rev. Wilmer Brown Scheduled As Friends Church Speaker The Rev. Wilmer N. Brown, ex ecutive director of the northwest region of the National Association of Evangelicals, will be the guest speaker in the South Salem Ericnds church, 1690 South Com mercial St., Sunday morning. Mr. Brown will bring an up-to-date report of the world-wide min istry of NAE in serving all Bible believing Christians at the inter denominational level. A former resident of Dallas, Rev. llicbert has been in Salem for the past six years. He Is a graduate of the Bible Institute in Los Angeles, Calif. (Capital Journal Photo) - KNOW YOUR PASTOR . Rev. Hiebert Founder Of One Salem Church When the Rev. Elmer J. Hiebert came back to the Willamette val ley about six years ago from Bible Institute of Los Angeles, he founded the Salem Heights Baptist church. It was his first assignment and as he says "we both started from scratch." First meetings were held in the Salem Heights community hall, a structure not entirely suited for a religious program. The membership quickly de termined that there was a need for a new building and so a tract of land was secured at 3530 Liberty Rd.,in an area that has seen the construction of many homes. - There an educational unit was constructed, which, is currently being used for Sunday school and regular church services. Plans call for the construction of a sanctuary. This will be built when finances permit. ' Later a second educational unit will be added. Membership of the congregation is around the SO mark, although most services see twice that num ber in attendance. The Su n d a y school with an enrollment of about 180 has an average attendance of 130. Rev. Hiebert is a product of Dallas in Polk county. He received all of his public school education there and when his friends among the younger ministers counseled and encouraged him to take re- Philip Good to Lead Fellowship Meeting "Lao-tze, the Teacher of Virtue," will be presented to the Unitarian Fellowship by Philip Good this Sunday morning at 10:30 at the YWCA. Come next August he will have beert married to Jean Hatfield of Salem seven years. They have three children, two boys and a girl. His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James N. Hiebert, are Dallas residents. Asked whether he had'ever had any doubts concerning his chosen field of endeavor, Rev. Hiebert re plied that he was perfectly satis, tied that he had made no mistakes. Church Women Slate Session The board of directors of Salem United church women will meet for their bi-monthly meeting on Tues day at 10 a.m. in the parlors of the First Christian church. Mrs. Sidney VanDyke, president, urges a full attendance to help plan for the "World Day of Prayer serv ices on March 8 and for the an nual meeting on April. 9. Reports will be given on the re cent slate meeting held here and on the progress of the state in stitutions rehabilitation program in which 21 church women from nine denominations are now serving as volunteers at the Oregon State hospital. Members Drive Gels Underway The Salem Bible church, 4100 Center St., has launched a Sunday School membership drive which will be concluded the last Sunday in February. Dr. Ernest R. Campbell, pastor, will speak on the subject, "The Christian's Responsibility to the World," at 11 a.m. Sunday. 'Sweetheart' Banquet Feb. 11 is the date for the an nual "Sweetheart Banquet" for all Salem ministers and their wives. Jackson, former light opera sing er, received his voice training un der one of America's most noted singers, John Charles Thomas. Beginning his music career be fore the public during his college days, Jackson sang in such operas as "La Traviata" and ''The Mar riage of Figaro." He studied voice at the Music Academy of the West at Santa Barbara, Calif. After two and one-halt years of training un der Thomas, he made his stage debut with the Los Angeles Light Opera company in "The Great Waltz" with Thomas and Dorothy Kirsten.
