He was looking out over the valley when asked what was his favorite form of recreation. With out any hesitation he said "Travel and reading." Mrs. Barker does not exactly share his fondness for overland travel by automobile but she sug gested that he liked very much to work with cars. The Rev. Barker came here from his native New Jersey where he was assistant pastor of Clinton Hill Baptist church In Newark, N.J. He had been there for four years and had gone there from Union City Grace Baptist church at Union City, N.J., which was his first pastrate. The still youthful pastor com pleted high school at Cliff Side high school in 1942 and then en tered the United States merchant marine academy at Kings Point, Long Island, He was graduated as ensign in the naval reserve and licensed as a deck officer of the merchant marine. He served with the merchant marine during the war years, vis iting many western coast ports as well as going into ports in many other parts or the world. Enters College The war over he entered Bob Jones university at Greenville. S.C., from which he was graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1950. His major there was Bible and English. Later he went to sea again to replenish his finances. He visited China, Siberia and other places behind the iron Cur tain. He entered the seminary in New York City in 1950 and was given his degree in sacred theol ogy in 1956 alter he completed his thesis. His work had been com pleted but the thesis had been de layed because of his work. iMeanwhile he was working with Baptist churches in New Jersey, first at Union City and later at Newark from where he came to Salem in October, 1956. Mr. and Mrs. Barker are de lightel with Oregon and happy to be the first family to occupy the new Orchard Heights road parson age in West Salem. They have one daughter, Bonnie Ruth, 2-year-old with blue eyes and silky pale gol den hair. The pastor's mother. Mrs. Mary Barker, and his brother, an army sergeant, came west to visit the Salem residents early this year. His brother has gone on and his mother will return to New Jersey tn early February. After living so close to New York City the pastor and his wife arc happy in Salem and have no desire to return to the east coast. Except perhaps for a visit, by automobile the pastor thinks, but his wife would much prefer other transportation.
