DAR Meeting Mrs. James T. Brand will speak on "Women in History for the history day program of Chcme keta chapter, Daughters of the American Revolu tion, on Saturday, February 2, at the home of Mrs. Lcnard Kephart at Silverton. The meeting opens at 2 o'clock and tea will be served during the afternoon. Mrs. Kephart is arranging a program featur ing f'.lverton musicians. The hostess committee includes Mesdames Ouintin Estell, W. P. Sea th, Adrian D. Olson and C. J. Mulcahy, all of Silverton: Mrs. W. W. Allen Mill City; and Mesdames R. D. Paris. J. Cifford Likes and Herman Darley, all of Stayton. Mrs. Donald Wanamaker was hostess this week to Potpourri club, the group meeting for dessert. A surprise shower was given for Mrs. Robert Wil Hams. Sunnvside (Special) The Friendly Hour club elected the following officers at its recent meet ing: President, Mrs. Ray Heckart: vice presi dent, Mrs. Ray Dutoit; secretary-treasurer, Mrs Hugh Nickeson. Mrs. Kenneth Cowman was hostess for the meeting. The club voted to meet only once a month for the remainder of the year. Mrs. John Neuen schwander will be hostess for the February 22 meeting which will be the annual family night dinner. Hal Hibbard auxiliary, United Spanish War Veterans, will meet for a dessert and social pro gram at Meier & Frank's-Salem Oregon room on Friday, February 1, at 1:30 p.m. , Mrs. Johanna Perry and Mrs. Madge Mayhood are corhostesses for the program. The Woman's Society of Christian Service of the First Methodist church will meet at the church on Wednesday, January 30. Mrs. P. D. Baker, president, has called an executive board meeting at 10:45 a.m. and luncheon will follow at noon. Circle 8 will serve trie luncheon. "Islands in My Community" is the theme for the program, with Circuit Judge Joseph B. Felton as :peaker. Mrs. Don Walton will lead the devo tions. All women of the church are invited to attend. Ladies Encampment auxiliary to Willamette Encampment division, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, meets Friday evening, February 1, at 8 O'clock at the IOOF hall. Practice for the state meeting of the encamp ment and auxiliary in Hillsbon. on February 9 will be conducted. The Hillsboro sessions open at 3 o'clock and continue into the evening hours. Members of the Salem auxiliary will participate also in the state mccting'of auxiliaries at Eugene on February 2. The program which starts at 3 o'clock will be devoted to the setting up of a Hate-wide organization of auxiliaries. Marion auxiliary. Veterans of Foreign Wars, has a social program set for Monday evening at the VFW hall at 8 o'clock. A "cake walk" to raise funds for auxiliary projects will be a feature of the program. Each member will donate a cake and cakes will be won through a competitive game plus a nominal pay ment. Barbara Frietchie tent, Daughters of Union Vet erans of II e Civil War, meets Friday afternoon, February 1, at one o'clock, at the home of Mrs. F. M. Peyton, 910 Market street. Plans for a benefit dance for the March of Dimes will be discussed by Willamette Ladies auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles at its meeting Tuesday evening at the Eagles hall, at 8 o'clock. The dance will be given in the hall on February J. Highly successful and enjoyable was the benefit card party of the Salem Woman's club Friday afternoon, with 138 reservations for the bridge hours following the dessert. Mrs. Beverly Lyons, home economist. Portland, demonstrated the electronic oven which baked cup cakes in one second and provided enough for the large group in an hour's time. Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson of Salem assisted Mrs. Lyons in the pro gram arranged through the Phillips Appliance com pany. Each table was centered with a bouquet of roses made by Mrs. Jack Henningscn. Mrs. John S. Tyler, Jr., welcomed the guests and introduced Mrs. George Rossman, state president of Oregon Federation of Women's clubs, who responded brief ly. Mrs. David H. Cameron, accompanied by Mrs. Lyman McDonald, sang three numbers. Mrs. TylT extended an invitation to all guests to attend the club's guest day program in February. Kurtz and Charles Crawford. The adult program department of the Salem YWCA announces the start of three classes during the next week. YWCA classes arc open to all persons in the community, 17 years of age or older. Miss Edna Mingus again will instruct a class in writing at the YWCA. beginning this Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Instruction will be given during the 12-week course in all types of writing. Members of Miss Mingus" classes have had ar ticles and short stories published in various maga zines. The course will continue for 12 weeks, regis trations being accepted through the second week. Anthony Silvers, landscape architect, will teach a new class in landscape gardening on Thursday evenings, beginning January 31 at 7:30 o'clock. Men as well as women are welcome to jo:n this class, which will have as its emphasis the enjoy ment of gardening. Mr. Silvers will emphasize the "why" of each aspect of landscaping 'e g. plan ning, selection, installation, maintenance i and will suggest sources of the "How" to do it. The cour.-e will include the planning of specific gardens, and the making of scale models, as well as lectures and discussions of each procedure. The only sup piles needed are paper and pencil. Mr. Silvers urges attendance at the first meeting of the class this Thursday evening because material will be given at that time which will not be repeated. Mrs. Lcnamao Schimenek who has helped sev eral women in this locality m?ke hats, will teach a millinery class on Tuesday niehts at 7:30 at the YWCA. On Tuesday. February 5. Mrs. Schimenek will give a free introductory lesson at whicfc she :ll show designs which may be copied and dis cuss materials. That's the word from the large group of volun teers making up the Mothers March for the annual polio fund drive. " Between 700 and 800 women are to participate jn the march. Bride at a ceremony solemnized on January 18 was Miss Barbara Jo Pierce, who was married to Ronald Ralph Lowery. The bride is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Edward Pierce and Mr. Lowery is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gola Lowery. The service was at 8 o'clock in the evening in the Lahish Center Evangelical United Brethren church, the Rev. Lyman L. Myers officiating. Pink and white chrysanthemums and carnations decorated the church. Lighting the tapers preceding the service were Misses Sharon Lowery and De lores Copley. For the music. Miss Marilyn Myers sang and Miss Janet Pearsall played the piano. The bride wore a dress with embroidered nylon bodice and skirt of tulle and taffeta. The illusion veil was held to a small headpiece, and the bride carried a cascade arrangement of pink and white carnations. Mr. Pierce gave his daughter in mar riage. Mrs. Roy Pearsall was honor attendant. She wore a pastel green frock and carried a cascade ot pink carnations. Misses Joanne Lowery and Wanda Noel were bridesmaids. They wore identical aqua-green frocks and carried pink carnation cas cades. Darrell Austin was best man. I'shers were David Adams and Terry Copley. The bride's mother wore a blue lace dress with pink accessories and a corsage of white carna tions. Oregon musicians under 21 years of age who have performed as soloists with the Portland 'Junior Symphony orchestra have been made eligible for the March 18 Pops soloist competitions, it is an nounced by Dr. James Hart, chairman of the Portland Symphony society music committee. The contest is open to any vocalist or instru mentalist who resides in Oregon and meets the stated age qualification. The winner will appear on the March 18 Pops program only. There is no soloist competition lor the March 1 or April, 12 Pops nights. Those interested may write to the Portland Symphony society, 403 Park building, Portland S, Oregon, and letters should be marked: "Attention, Pops Soloist Competition." Mr. Whiteside, chaplain at the University of Oregon where Mr. Ahrens has been a student, officiated at the rites. About 50 friends and relatives of the young couple were present for Ihe candlcl'ght ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her step father. She wore a tweed suit with black acces sories and carried a while Bible topped by an orchid. Her only attendant was her sister, Miss Barbara Brown ol Portland, who wore a white knit suit with white and black accessories and carried a nosegay of pink and white carnations. Best man was Mclvin Murray and Marshall Kooncc served as usher, both classmates of the bridegroom. For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Nelson wore a gray suit with black accessories and a pink rosebud corsage Mrs. Ahrens wore a navy blue suit with pink accessories and her corsage was also of pink rosebuds. At the informal reception given by the men in McClure hall the three tiered wedding cake was cut bv Mrs. Wallace Green of Gresham, a cousin of Mrs. Ahrens. and the punch was served by the residenls of Ihe hall. Miss Charlotte Nelson passed Ihc guest book. The young couple will live in Seatlle. Wash. Mr Ahrens is a graduate of Woodburn high school and his bride has been employed In Ihe state library at Salem Attending Ihe wedding Irom Woodburn were the Ahrens family, the llev. and Mrs. Donald B.
