Salem, Oregon, Saturday, January 26, 1957 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Section 2 Page S rresbytenans Plan Varied Sunday Work A new Inquirers' class for adults on the moaning of membership in the church begins in the Condit room of the First Presbyterian church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. The six weekly classes will feature the new materials pre pared by the Board of Christian Education: filmstrips and a text. "The Way of Discinleship" as well as questions and discussion of the basic Christian beliefs and prac tices. The new Board of Deacons, their wives and hushands, will be enter tained by the retiring class at the church, Wednesday evening Janu ary 30 at o'clock. There will be organization for the coming year, fellowship, refreshments. Teachers and workers in t h e Sunday School will be attending the Church School Conference of Willamette Presbytery held at the First Presbyterian church in Al bany from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29th. Dr. Paul S. Wright and Miss Rachel Swann, Director of Children's Work for the denomination will be of the lead ers. The last Church Family Night Program with a no host supper for all ages is to be held Sunday eve ning at 6:30 in the Social Hall. Families may bring a covered hot dish or sandwich, salad, dessert. "This High Calling", a color 44 minutc movie with on the - spot recordings will take the viewers where the Presbyterian church is at work. Cars will leave the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday for Eugene where those making the trip will visit the Central Presbyterian church of that city. The trip is being sponsored by the sub-committee on Christian Education. Mission Work Study Slated The annual School of Missions or the Calvary Baptist church will begin Sunday evening at 6:15. This school is held each year and is designed to acquaint the mem bership with the mission work of the American Baptist Convention, The emphasis this year is ".Mis sions U.S.A." Directing t h e school will be Mrs. Hillis Heath. h. School of Missions is graded. There is a study group for every agq in any family. Following the period of instruction, a period of fellowship and snack time will be held. Dr. W. Berkeley Ormond, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church, will apeak at both services Sunday. His message at 11:00 a.m. will be "The Making of Life."' Life is a gift handed to us by God. The 7:30 p.m. message will center upon "me Big I'ush" and is a message designed to give the rea sons behind the existing mission program ot the American Baptist convention. StJlark'sWill Install Sunday Congregational and church aux iliary officers will be installed bv St. Mark's Lutheran church dur ing Sunday morning s service at 11 o clock. Rev. John L. Cauble, pastor, will be in charge. A general report concerning the annual congregational meeting and ine status ol the building pro gram will be given by Dr. B. L. Trelstad, chairman of the build ing committee. The 8:30 a.m. service will be Identical except for the installa tion. Congrcgationals Opera le Nurseries For the convenience of worship ers, the First Congregational Church. 700 Marion Street, pro vides three church-time nurseries for babies, pre-schoolers and primary-age children. The Junior Choir for children 8-13 years of ace also rehearses at the church time hour. Sunday at 11 a.m.. Dr. Keiser will preach on "The Greatest Story Ever Told". At 6 30 p.m., the Pilgrim Fel lowship will meet in the parsonage to view and discuss a civil liber ties tilm, "Sound of a Stone". Final arrangements will bo made for the observance of Youth Sun day, which will be February 3rd. Olscn, pastor of West Salem Methodist church was originally a Lutheran, having been born in Norway before coming to the United States in 1914 as a boy of 14. The West Salem minister has had a varied experience in the field of religion, having spent three years in the Aleutian Islands and in the Cook Inlet area below An chorage, Alaska. There he minis tered to a population that was mixed in nationalities as well as many Indian natives. Rev. Olsen came to Salem in 1954 after having served a Metho dist church at Garibaldi, Ore., for two years prior to mat time. Rev. Olsen was not accompanied Hiebert Starts Sermon Series Rev. Elmer Hiebert, pastor of the Salem Heights Baptist church, 3530 Liberty Rd., will begin a. series of sermons Sunday morn ing on the "Sovereignty of Grace.'." This series of sermons will con sist of a study of the book of Galatians. The series is expected to run for several weeks. At this service, the church Ladies Trio will sing, which is composed of Mrs. Hcrshcl Frickey, Mrs. Harold Childers, and Mrs. Don Robinson. Mrs. John Collins is the church pianist. In the evening service of the church the pastor is preaching on the Book of Acts. This Sunday the message will be on the subject. "When Believers Were First Called Christians." Lutherans to Seek Members MOLALLA (Special) This Sun day installation of church officers and re-dedication of those holding over will be held in Molalla Grace Lutheran church. Grant William and Jenifer Louise, children of Mrs. Patricia Gruvcr, were bap tized at the Jan. 6 services. Julia Jaync, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bennett, was baptized at the Dec. 30 services. The evangelism committees are functioning full force for the big things that will take place in Feb ruary in the church. Hopes are high for a successful four-day evangelism program. The Walther League received $22 in the Whcatridge seal cam paign. AMITY FAMILY NIGHT AMITY (Special) The Amity Methodist church announces the January family night will be in the church dining room on the evening of Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. A no-host dinner will be served fol lowed by a brief official board meeting. During the evening a film "The Life of St. Paul" will be presented. OLSEN Methodist Church to the United States by his par ents. However, he had relatives m Buffalo, N.Y., where he attended high school. His elementary edu cation was secured in Norway. His first affiliation ' was with the Norwegian-Danish Methodist church. He became a straight Methodist in 1939 when virtually all of the various branches of that denomination were meVged into one central organization. Rev. Olsen attended the Nor wegian - Danish Seminary and Northwestern University in Evans- ton, 111., later completing his theo logical work at Garrett Biblican Institute. '. Following his graduation Rev Olson was assigned to a Methodist church in Brooklyn, N.Y., later moving to Detroit. Mich. Feeling that there was a need for missionary work among the natives of Alaska, Rev, Olsen went to the Aleutians. The Methodist pastor married Kathryn Deldrng in Buffalo, N.Y, They have four children, three of them married. A son is currently living in Alaska. Annual Conference Church of God in Eugene Jamiary 26 The ministers of the Church of God in Oregon meet in annual con ference in Eugene January 26 and 27, according to an announcement by the Rev. Isham E. Crane, the State Chairman. The Rev. Crane and the Friendly Street Church of God are hosts to the conference. Among the speakers at the two day session are Dr. A. F. Gray, President of Pacific Bible College, Portland, and the Rev. James G. Wade, pastor of Holladay Park Church of God in Portland. The theme of the conterence Is "The Minister's Task", and Dr. Kenneth L. Crose. former mission ary in the Near East is directing the initial presentation of the theme. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. The dinner meeting will mark the be ginning of the annual observance of Youth Week, Jan. 27-Feb. 3. The main feature of Youth Week observance will be the evening service of worship, 7:30 p.m. Sun day, when the young people will conduct the entire service and present a drama, "A Drop in the Bucket, describing the missionary program of the young people to which they gave more than $(00.00 last year and have pledged $700.00 for the current year. The evening service will include singing, wor ship meditation, and the com munion of the Lord's Supper. JBJ S CWfc t Purr i tmvkt h Training Course for Work In Religion The Evangelistic Temple at Park and Market Streets, announce the annual Workers Training Course of its Church and Church School will be conducted starting Monday, Jan. 2S, and continuing until Fri day, Feb. 1. There will be two sessions each evening, the first be ing a "Work Shop'' period and be ginning at 7:30 o'clock. The course being presented this year is en- Missionary to Japan Speaks Sunday Night The Rev. Wallace Brownlee, missionary from Japan, will ap pear at the Lnglewood Evangelical United Brethren Church on Sun day evening. For the past six years the Rev. Brownlee and his family have been working in the Hokkaido dis trict, which is located ill the north ernmost Island of Japan. Brown lee's chief assignment was t h e establishing of pioneer mission churches, many of which were only a couple miles from Russian held territory. The district is sepa rated only by a small strait of water from the Russian occupied island of Sakhalin. "1 oiten felt like rowing across that strait and starting a church among these poor Communist people. 1 think the people would have welcomed the Gospel; however we can be sure the government wouldn't tolerate this", wrote the Rev. Brownlee in his letter to the pas tor. Brownlee is a member of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, which cooperates with ten other denominations in forming the United Church -of Christ in Japan. Peirce of Santa Cruz, Calif., who recently resigned his position as Dean of Education at Bethany Bible College, Santa Cruz, Calif., to devote himself to Bible teaching and evangelism throughout the country. Dr. Peirce has been working in the field of Christian education for - many years, having instituted and headed this- department in Bethany Bible College for seven years. In addition to his work in the field of Christian education, Dr. Peirce has pastored a number of prominent churches of the Assem blies of God and ministered in evangelism in various parts of the United States, Canada and Europe. Pastor L. A. Larson of the Evan gelistic Temple states that in addi tion to members and workers from his own church and school, there will be six churches of the Assem blies of God in this area who will be cooperating in the training school.
