Murray of Se attle, Girl Scout national staff member, will be in Salem from Monday, January 28, to Thursday, January 31, according to Mrs. Charles W. Mills, president of the local Santiam Girl Scout council. Miss Murray is adviser for Girl Scout councils in Oregon and Alas ka. In addition to working with the local Girl Scout volunteers, Miss Murray will interview qualified women interested in administra tive positions with Girl Scout councils throughout the country. Information and appointments may be obtained by calling the local Girl Scout office at 195!) Fair-, grounds road. On Tuesday, Miss Murray will meet at 10 a.m. with the Santiam executive board at the home of Mrs. Mills. Those planning In at tend include Mrs. T. A. McMinn, Mrs. C. G. Richards, and Mrs. D. J. Wednesday, Miss Murray will be the Girl Scout regional staff member at a conference in the Marion hotel for United Fund directors throughout the state. The Santiam council training committee, headed by Mrs. .Joe Curran, Albany, will confer with Miss Murray Thursday morning In the Girl Scout office at 10 o' clock. Also on Thursday at the Scout office the finance commit tee, headed by R. H. Fidler. Salem, will meet with the Council adviser. I Secretaries Meet The hislory of shorthand was discussed by Miss Carol Water man at the dinner meeting of Cas cade chapter, National Secretaries association, at the Golden Pheas ant Tuesday evening. Mrs. Martha Pinson spoke on present methods of instruction and simplified proc esses in shorthand. The dinner was the regular monthly social and educational session of the chapter and guests were entertained by the members. Method: Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and brown sugar. li sugar is lumpy, push through strainer or roll to make smooth before silt ing.) Stir together the undiluted evaporated milk, orange rind, or- nnge juice and molasses in a large mixing bowl. Add the sift ed dry ingredients; stir just enough to blend. Fold in walnuts. Turn into well greased loaf pan !) by 5 by 3 inches). Rake in moderate (350 degrees oven about 1 hour. Loosen loaf from sides of pan with spatula or knife; turn nut on rack to cool. Miss Kenyon was in charge of the home economics department of the North Marion Union High school for two years, resigning last year to accept a teaching posi tion in Cottage Grove. Brownie troops in the south Sa lem area will stage their first ses sion Thursday afternoon from 4 ta S o'clock and monthly thereafter on the fourth Thursday, until ths end of school. More than 140 Brownies from north Salem turned out last week for their first instruction, sched' uled to be repeated on the third Thursday from 4 to 5 o'clock of each month through May. Songleader is Mrs. Frank Beck with, who leads the songfest dur ing the first part of the hour with such songs as the "Brownie Hik ing Song" and "When 'Ere You Make a Promise." The Brownies folk dance during the last part of the hour under ths leadership of Mrs. John As.quith, learning simplified versions oi such dances as the Pancake Polka, Oklahoma Mixer, Cotton-Eyed Joe, and the Mexican Clap Dance. Assisting Mrs. Asquith with ths folk dance instruction will be ths Intermediate Scouts from Mrs. Gilbert Anderson's troop No. 71 who are working toward their Con tinued Service badges.
