The area of valuable' watershed blackened by fire during this dis astrous season now totals more than 70,000 acres and the holo caust proceeds. Every acre of watershed that is burned off adds to the flood danger when the rains come later in the winter. Professional firefighters agree that California is probably I h e worst place in '.he nation for ex plosive . brush and forest blaze. Sometimes sun-baked brush is so lacking in moisture there isn't anything to crackle and the blaze races with a terrible swift ness and silence against the un warned firefighter. Last Sunday 11 trapped men died fighting a vast blaze in San Diego County's Cleveland Nation al Forest that is still burning. The men were " surprised by a wind shift, forced back against a cliff and boxed in. "There was no confusion," said a survivor, Lionel Wood. "We did not know the fire was coming be cause it didn't make any noise." Sudden wind shifts, or heat produced turbulence called "fire storms," can be as bad. This was the cause of California's most deadly fire in October 1933. Twenty-eight firefighters were trapped and killed in a canyon in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, a large wooded area. Fifteen men died July 12, 1963, in a Mendocino National Forest fire in northern California when a smoldering section of brush sud denly flared up. In a survey of firefighters and officials throughout the state most of them emphasized that Califor nia, and particularly southern Cal ifornia, is a top fire hazard area because of dryness, wind condi tions, widespread vegetation and steep topography. There have been three major fires in southern California this season the Cleveland forest blaze and two in the San Bernardino Mountains. One of the latter start ed Aug. 21, burned over 10,250 acres, and destroyed several structures. The other started Nov. 19, burned across 15,296 acres, razed several homes and struc tures and cost the life of one fire fighter. . - :- Boy Confesses Setting Blaze ThatKilledll SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UP)- A 16 ycar old Indian boy has confessed to setting a 44,500-acre forest lire which burned to death 11 fire fighters. "I just got a crazy idea to throw a match in the grass to see if it would burn," Gilbert Paipa, a high school student, told Elwood Stone, U.S. Forest Service fire in vestigator. The boy was arrested Wednes day at the Pine Hills fire camp where he had been employed as a firefighter two days ago. The Forest Service said he confessed lo tossing a match last Saturday in grass near a .:abin on the lnaja Indian Reservation where his family has lived for two gen erations. Paipa was turned over to au thorities here. Stone said a felony complaint was being sought from Deputy District Attorney Calude Brown. Tot Burns to Death in Car SITV!.4T Calif.
