GEORGE HAYES LAFAYETTE -(Special) -"For Sal Wheel Chair." Perhaps that doesn't mean much to the average person, but to elderly John Sharp, of Lafayette, it stands for quite a lot. He will be 81 years old, September 4, and has spent most of the last four years in bed but not any more! , The plucky little man, whose pleasant chatter is a constant in spiration to his many friends and neighbors, dates his story of ill ness and return back some 29 years ago. It was in Newton oounty, Mo., a quarter of a cen tury ago that Sharp fell from a wagon pulled by a team of horses. A wagon wheel passed over his body, and he has had physical fcaubles ever since. John and his wife, Grace, enme (to Lafayette 8 years ago. It was a common sight to see him hob bling about town on Ins way to church or the post office, or to see his fine garden, the envy of everyone around. Four years ago, however, pneumonia struck, and that together with heart trouble got the little man down. Two years were spent bedfast. Doctors said it was doubtful if he could make it, and all agreed he would probably never walk again. But they hadn't considered the de termination which bad kent him going all these years. At the end of two years, aided by his atten tive wife and various other rela tives, John was lifted to a wheel chair, a welcome change from the high hospital bed. The next year was spent between the bed and the wcel chair. Then. "Mr. Sharp" as all La fayette knows hi"i, decided it was time to try walking again. He persuaded his family to find walker for him. Since that time, the wheel chair has been cast aside and more and more time spent in the walker. For an 80-year-old man to learn to walk again was quite a task but neighbors rejoiced recently when they saw him walking out in the front yard the first time In four years! Since that time Mr. Sharp claims he's walked around the house a dozen times. By the way, the wheel chair is no longer for sale. It sits on the front porch as a resting station during the out door jaunts. The tired old heart slill causes trouble and it is neces sary to make frequent rest stops Constant companion and help during these hard years has been his wife, Grace, who admits her job is much easier now that John can satisfy his longing to be out of-doors. "He just wouldn't be still, and was constantly wanting to get out and work, she says. The Jive children of the hliarps, (one son was killed in World War III together with numerous grand children have patiently watched the progress and of course rejoice that Dad now walks. What's more, Mr. Sharp is not through gardening 6y a long way, either.
