A letter has reached the Cham ber of Commerce from William Haaker, conductor of the Virginia Symphony orchestra. He writes: "With my periodic tours as concert pianist, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra season hap pening in the late spring, I am interested in choosing a growing community in which to live, wnere my ellorts could be put to use as organizer and conductor of a symphony orchestra. "I would sjppreciate it if you would give me your reaction to the idea of taking up residence in Salem, and at the same time putting me in contact, prior to my arrival, with some key musi cally and civic-minded leaders that might help toward such a project." Silverlon Seeks Freeway Guides The city of Silvcrton wants some signs on the Salem By pass di rojjfing traffic to that city. The Salem Chamber of Com merce is cooperating. Bareback riding Gene Kramer, Sutherland, Neb, Farming Land Values Higher WASHINGTON Iffl The value of farm land in the United States increased in all regions in the year ended last March, the Agriculture Department reported Monday. i The national average value was up 4 per cent, with the largest increases from S to 11 per cent and upward being recorded in the Southeastern slates. Values in most of the Northeast ern and Lake States were up nearly as much. Values declined in only two states, Colorado and Nebraska. The average value of farmland increased less than 1 per cent during the four - month period ended March 1, the department said. That was a slower rate than during any period of similar length in the past two years. Waltons Seek Park Monies The Salem chapter of the Izaak Walton league would like to im prove Marion county park No. 1 on the Santiam river near Gates, R. P. Crossland, president of the organization said in a letter to the county commissioners Monday, Under the terms of a tentative agreement between the league and the county, the latter will provide approximately $200 wilh which to purchase supplies for, improve ments. It is presumed members of the chapter will perform the labor in Ihe construction of tables, benches. latrines and other articles needed. The park is said to be attrac tively located and, if improved would be extensively used by fam- 'lics and fishermen. Dennis O'Connor Riles on July 5 MOLALLA Dennis J., -O'Connor, 77, died at his home, route 2, Molalla, Sunday, July 1 after a long illness. ' Born January 7, 1879 in Craw ford county, Kansas, he came to Oregon in 1905. He married An na C.'Sperl at Vancouver, Wash., October 9, 1919. They came here in 1831. An expert sewing machine re pair man, he had worked through out the northwest states until his retirement. Survivors are the widow, Anna O'Connor; brother, Patrick O'Connor, Vallcjo, Calif.; sister, Mrs. Maggie Marvin, Cody, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Molalla I.O.O.F. lodge. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 5 at 1 p.m. from fcverhart and Kent chapel. Kcv. Jones, pastor of Molalla Chris tian church, will officiate and final riles will be at Portland Memorial. Friends have heen asked to contribute toward the Molalla Ambulance fund in lieu of flo wers. Coast Guard Saves 3 as Skiff Upsets NEWPORT, Ore. HI -A lifeboat from the Yaquina Bay Const Guard station rescued three occu pants of a small skiff after it overturned in the water off the Umpqua River mouth Saturday. This time they went -to Wac- cabtic where the service was per- lormcd at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Barrett. -About 25 guests were present at the wedding, Including 15 of Mil lers relatives. , Clackamas Okays lmproyemen of Scolts Mills Road Clackamas county looks with favor upon the request of the Scotts Mills school board recently directed to Marion county s com missioners for improvement of a road in the vicinity of Scolts Mills. This was indicated in a Idler received Monday by the county court from Clackamas officials who said it would assist in the transportation of pupils to the Scolts Mills school. The improvement, if made, would make possible the opera tion of a single bus loop route in both Clackamas and Marion counties, thus eliminating one bus. The road extension, how ever, would be up a steep grade and would prove quile expensive in the opinion of the commis sioners. Cunnyngham Rite Planned Tuesday Funeral services for Fannie J.
