Coimly Court to
Circulate Petition
On Shop Building
While the City of Silverton has
voiced no objection to a proposal
that a county shop building be
erected on Grant street near the
Catholic school, it is suggested that
the county court circulate a peti
tion among residents of the area.
The suggestion was contained in
a letter to County Engineer John
Anderson from R. E. Borland, Sil
verton city manager. Anderson in
turn asked the county court for di
rection in the matter.
Borland's communication report
ed that the building project was
referred to the Silverton planning
commission which recommended
that the court circulate a petition
to sound out public sentiment.
Although the court took no offi
cial action, it was indicated that
it would not circulate petitions.

might affect the new base.
Much of the company s work
now is concerned with recom

the base itself. This includes lo
cations and designs for runways,
barracks, administrative offices,
housing and Industrial areas.
Some data has already been giv
en to the air force and more
is being compiled at the Daly
firm's home office in Omaha,

Acquisition of property for the

fall after congress votes initial
appropriations for the project.
Guard May Get
Whithycombe
In Washington. D.C. Tuesday a
House Armed Services subcommit
tee recommended that the Oregon
National Guard be given the site
on which Camp Withycombe In
Clackamas county is located.
The subcommittee sent the bill
recommending that the federal
government cede to the state of
Oregon about 234 acres in Clacka
mas county to the full committee.
The land mentioned was acquired
by the war department in the per
iod from 1910 to 1919 as a rifle
range for the organized militia. It
was originally used as rifle
range and with federal . nd state
funds over a period of years has
been built up as the main supply
depot for all of the Oregon National
Guard property and equipment.
Development of the depot was
under the initiate of the National
Guard, though the state has never
had a lease on the property, but in
stead just been an occupant.

Court Asked
To Clean Out
Bridge Area
Operators of the West Mush
room plant on East State street
have requested that accumulated
dirt beneath a concrete bridge
a distance east of the plant be
dredged out.
It was said that the channel
has silted in badly, a condition
that causes water to back up on
the south side of the street,
forming a pool. It was feared that
the stagnant water would pro
vince breeding plica of mosqui
toes. School District 104, east of
Woodburn, his asked that the
ditch along a county road be
deepened to permit a faster get
away of water during the winter
months. The school has a base
ment which drains to the Toad
side ditch. Frequently water
backs up into the basement caus
ing inconvenience and damage.
