Salem, Oregon, Monday, May 21, 1956 THE CAPITAL' JOURNAL Section 2 Page 5 Burjis Denies Our Age One Of Inflation Ike's Economic Adviser Warns About Some Developments BOSTON iff "President Eisen hower's chief economic adviser said today it is a ' disservice both to truth and to social opportunity to describe our times as an age of inflation. "We are living in an age," said Arthur F. Burns, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, "that can be either .one of infla tion or of general price stability, depending on the courage arid wisdom that private citizens and government officials bring to their responsibilities." Burns' remarks were prepared for the National Federation of Financial Analysts Societies. While qualifying his remarks about this not being an age of inflation. Burns cautioned about some current developments. He said for example that the "poten tial danger" in the rise in whole tale prices in the last six to 12 months should not be minimized, although he said it is important to sec the recent price movements in perspective. The remarkable thing about the level of wholesale prices, he said, is that, despite the widespread accumulating pressures of de mand, it has risen so little, lie continued: "When an economy is poised on a very high plateau, as ours has been in recent months, the threat of inflation cannot be very distant. The like, unhappily, is also true of the threat of recession. "Aggregate economic activity is now proceeding at peak levels, but divergent movements are going on beneath the surface. Capital expenditures on the part of busi ness have been rising rapidly, and governmental spending as a whole has also been moving upward. Home building and retail trade. on the other hand, have been somewhat sluggish . . . Develop ments in prices, inventories, and retail trade will bear watching in coming weeks and months. Man 'Sleeps' Way Into City Jail Even a cup of cold water failed to arouse a man who had fallen asleep in a lounge chair at a local theatre Saturday night. So the po lice hauled him off to the city jail where he was booked on a drunk charge. The officers were called when theatre attendants failed to arouse the man from what appeared to be a deep sleep. Cloth, Patterns Taken From Auto Several yards of cloth, a dress pattern, a zipper and a pair of white shoes, all valued at $11.80, were taken Saturday from her automobile, reported Mrs. Bernice Moore, 3285 Abrams Ave. The vehicle was parked in the 200 block of Court street at the time of the theft. Iielhel School to Graduate 2 Girls Two girls make up the graduat ing class of Bethel school which will hold its graduation at the school at 8 p.m. Wednesday. The graduates are Vickie Kooper and Fern Faria. Gene Owen will be the speaker at the ceremony. Mrs. Maltie Osburn is the eighth grade teacher. The school will close Friday with the annual picnic. COMIC LEAVES HOSPITAL HOLLYWOOD (UP) Jerry Lewis, of the comedy team of A'artin and Lewis, left Mt. Sinai hospital Sunday after a series of tests for a possible heart condi tion. I he rubber - faced comic was taken to the hospital Friday after bn complained of pains in his chest. It was reported Lewis has been bothered with a heart mur mur for several years. REBUILDS CHURCH WOODBURN James Livesay. Livesay Lumber Co., has pur chased the old Lutheran church and Lutheran hall on Doud street. He is constructing a three bedroom residence out of the hall. (UP) Milton Weihrauch, president of the Inter national Electrical Workers Union's big District Four, claimed that elimination of the United El ectrical Workers Union was near completion today in the northern New Jersey - Metropolitan New York nrea. He said more than 15,000 of in dependent UE's 18.000 members in the area had switched affiliation to the IUE, an AFL-CIO union. Theater Group Preparing for 'Blithe Spirit' Play to Be Given at North Salem High Friday Might Cast members for the production of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, to be presented on the stage of the North Salem high school Friday evening by Fentaele theatre per sonnel, are entering their last week of rehearsals. The play will be presented only one night. All proceeds from the production will be given to the speech department of the high school for new equipment. Blithe Spirit is one of Noel Cow ard's most popular comedies. The plot concerns a novelist who is writing a book about a homicidal medium. In order to get informa tion ft - his book he invites a local medium to his home. She unwit tingly produces the ghost of his first wife, who can be seen and heard only by him. The startling effect of this situation on his sec ond wife creates hilarious misun derstandings and confusion. This production is a revival of the Blithe Spirit which Pentacle theatre produced two seasons ago. With the exception of two persons, all the actors are the same as in the first show. Special effects, props and furniture are to be ar ranged by students of the speech department. Tickets are being sold by stu dents and are also on sale to the general public at Meier & Frank Co. and Stevens & Son. Senators Call For Check on Pornography By JOHN CIIADWICK WASHINGTON UV-A combina tion of federal and state laws is, called for by Senate investigators to combat a 500-million-dollar-a-! year racket they say has been built up by "loathsome and lech- erous purveyors of pornography." j In a 71-page report on a na tionwide investigation, the Senate1 Juvenile Delinquency subcommit-1 tee said last night "a very large percentage" of this pornographic i output is reaching teen-agers. The subcommitte, headed by Sen. "efauver (D-Tenn), said much of it is distributed by "smut peddlers" lurking around schools. It called on the federal govern ment to halt importation of sala cious material and to block its distribution through the mails and its transportation in interstate commerce. It urged both state and federal governments to enact laws provid ing stiffer jail sentences and fines. The subcommittee reported a relationship between what it called the "almost unbelievable rapidity" with which sex crimes have increased and "a mushroom ing growth in the production, dis tribution and sale of pronographic materials." Its report said that "the most insidious effect of present-day pornographic materials is the por trayal of abnormal sexual behav ior as being normal. Perversion fo. profit thus wrecks the chances of the impressionable adolescent to achieve a normal healthy re lationship upon reaching maturity." The U.S. aircraft carrier Sara toga is 187 feet from waterline to the top of its mast. Teacher Group in Sales Tax Attack Two resolutions directed against the sales tax were adopted during a meeting of the executive board of the Oregon Federation of Teach ers Saturday. One of the resolutions opposed the sales tax unequivocally, term ing it a "regressive tax which re quires those who are least able, to pay the same percentage of their expenses as others more able." Another resolution opposed Joint Senate Resolution 4, which would permit the legislature to forestall any immediate referendum of sales tax or any other tax measure. I DOWNTOWN I SALEM .
