"We're going to have a hard time averting a power short age in the early M's," he said, "because of the uttor irresponsi bility of some people except in furthering their own political ca reers who hove halted power development. The allusion to Ore gon's two Democratic senators was obvious. They have opposed partnership development of power dams in the area. In commenting on the status of Oregon's labor force, Gov. Smith said that "the finest working con aitions in America are right here in Oregon. . . under a Republican administration often criticized for being unkind to the working man." He explained that Oregon consis tently has the highest average weekly and hourly wage in the nation. This statement probably was aimed at labor organizations and Democratic politicians who i have been criticizing him and the late Gov. Paul Patterson for at titudes toward labor. Smith also has been attacked for entering a struck newspaper plant during the past week. The governor also stated that Oregon excelled in education, for est products, welfare, state insti tutions, and highways. Babies Arrive In East Salem EAST SALEM Two new babies were born this past week in Salem hospitals to Auburn parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moustach etti of 3780 Midway Dr. arc par ents of a daughter who was given the name of Barbara Lynn. She has a brother Marvin Lee and a sister, Marta Lou. Her grand mothers are Mrs. Angela Jennings of Salem. Mrs. Lloyd Mack of Basalt, Colo., and a great grand mother, Mrs. Alice Brown of Sa lem. fr. and Mrs. Ernest Rhodes 'Carolyn Greene) also are par ents of a new daughter who was named Karen Diane. She has three brothers, James, Henry and Glenn. Her grandparents are James Greene of Los Angeles and Mrs. D. E. Rhodes of Carmen, Okla. Club Will Elect At Middle Grove MIDDLE GROVE - A nomin ating committee was named for new officers for the Middle Grove Parents club at last week's meet ing. Serving on the committee will be Peter Austin, Mrs. Stanley Britton, and Mrs. Olvirn York. Each school has been asked to submit names for the new junior high schools and Mrs. Adora Han son was appointed chairman for this club's participation. Mrs. Vernon Glass spoke on the importance of science on the school's curriculum. The room award for parents present went to the room of Mrs'. Vivian Clark.
