Wl"- Jg scph "Samuel llavsepian typifies some of the confusion you run into in trying to figure out whether Florida will go for President Ei senhower again in November, Havespi.m is a rcrirhot Eisen hower booster. But he is just as red hot for Fuller Warren, a Dem ocratic former governor and now one of five men contesting Gov. Lcroy Collins' bid for rcnomina tion in the May 8 primary. It doesn't strike llavsepian as ' unusual that Warren, whom liev.cre held now, he thinks Eiscn chamnions so stoutly, is a strong hower would carry the stale hours of looking and it's almost as hard to find an Eisenhower Democrat or Republican of 1S52 who blames Eisenhower person ally lor the integration move ment, A couple of Negro bellboys' in a local hotel said they would vote Democratic, "f think .times will be belter for working people like us if the Democrats get in," one of them said. "But, for goodness soke, don't put my name in the ,paper." Collins said that if the election Knowland ftf California entered against the Eisenhower slate in the Republican presidential pri mary May 29. But it is described as a sort f "standby" slate in the event that Eisenhower should, for any reason, withdraw his can didacy. Joe Miller Jr., Florida, chair man of the Florida-for-Knowland organization, said, "Our entire program is one of supporting the President if at the lime of the convention he is a candidate." booster of Adlai Stevenson both apainst Sen. Estes Kcfauver of Tennessee for Florida's 28- votes ip tile Democratic National Con vention, and against Eisenhower in November. But, to (piotc Havcspian, a pipe organ builder and a Democrat: "If Ike wasn't in it, I'd vote for Kefauvcr. Next lo Ike, I think he's another statesman. Stevenson is a politician.". Vice President Nixon is not his choice for Ike's running mate. "Nixon seems to agitate people," he said. "He could lose Eisen hower Florida. Nevertheless. llavsepian predicts, Florida vole for Eisenhower again again. "But," he said, "you've got lo remember that four years ago the Democratic leadership was silent. And, you . must bear in mind that the party in the state was disor ganized." Today, Collins said, the party is better financed, and he added that he thought there were indi cations it will be close ranks be hind the presidential nominee, once the primary are out of the way. Collins hasn't committed him self, but some of his own strong est supporters ar working for stc- will'vcnson. Warren and Gov. Collins, who say the Demo cratic party is stronger today and better financed than it was four years ago when Eisenhower got 544,036 votes to 444,950 for Steven son. Political reporters and both Democratic and Republican poli ticians say Stevenson has an edge on Kcfauver for Florida's Demo cratic convention votes. They are contesting in the second, or runoff Democratic primary May 29. Sen Russell (D-Gal bested Kcfauver in the preferential primary four years ago. Sen Holland (D-FIa) is luke warm to both Stevenson and Kc favuer. Sen. Smathcrs (D-FIa) has boosted Senate Majority Leader Lydon Johnson (D-Tex) as the party's 1056 standard bearer. Peyton Yon, assistant treasurer of the Republican State Execu tive Committee, registered as a Republican after .a tour of duty in 1952 as a Dcmocrats-for-Eiscn-howcr worker. He told this reporter he nnd a lot of his neighbors switched to Eisenhower four years ago be cause they thought the national Democratic organization had gone too far in pushing civil rights. And while he said lie is con fident Eisenhower will carry the stale again, he said the people he has talked to in west Florida "aren't too strong tor Nixon," adding: "He'll have to do a sell ing job (or himself down here." Southern opposition lo Nixon, where it is expressed, stems al most directly from his recent New York speech in which he claimed credit for the OOP 'stand in the civil rights field.
