DEAR HISS DIX: We are a heartbroken family with a problem that apears insoluble. Our 10-year-old daughter had been dating a boy two years older who never had impressed us very well. So we were highly relieved when he went into service and was sent overseas. Our relief was soon to be turned to consternation, how ever, as we found our daughter about to have his baby. The girl manufactured an excuse to leave home for a while, so we didn't know about her condition until the baby was almost due. She never told the young man. We bore all the expense and wanted to have the child put out for adoption. However, she was persuaded (not by her father or me) to contact the young man. A proxy, marriage was arranged, and from her point of view everything seems settled. We never did like the boy and think much less of him now. Neither has ever faced responsibility before, their backgrounds are so completely different we can't sec happiness ahead for our girl. Do you think they have a chance? Mrs. G. ANSWER: Given encouragement and co-operation by both families, these young people have a splendid chance for happiness. If their parents start to pull them apart, they have an equally sure chance of failure. Bury your own resentments, work only for the happiness of your daughter and her child. Be thankful the boy is anxious to marry her; believe me, if he wasn't honest and in love, he probably 'wouldn't do it. Mistakes can seldom be erased without leaving some mark. We can't have perfect solutions to all our problems and practically all of us must accept second-best in a great many cases. GREAT EXPECTATIONS Naturally you had very high hopes of your daughter making a splendid marriage. Now these may seem dashed. Again, every parent has great expectations for his children but they, being indi viduals and not carbon copies of Mother and Dad, must work out their own destinies. It's the older people who must adjust to the young. Help them in everv wav vou can to ect a good start. Hide your disappointment and disapproval. Ask God's help to make this adjustment, which won't be easy but will bring infinite rewards. DEAR MISS DIX: I'm a widow of 27 with a small son of 4. For months I have been keening company with a bachelor eight years older than I and he has asked me to marry him. He's very fond of my little boy, has a good position, fine disposition, and I think wo could be very happy except for one thing.
