STATE TOURNEY ENTRIES MISS A total of five Salem teams participated in the state meet In Portland at the East Side Bowl last week-end and none of them bowled spectacularly enough to leave more than a faint odor in the house. The high scoring was saved for the doubles and singles action Sunday afternoon. Gene "Bones" Braucht and partner Bob "Wildman" White did them selves proud in the doubles event as they took over the Class "A" leadership with a 1228 count We'll refrain from mentioning who was the dog as we do not want to spoil a beautiful friendship. Tony Vitlone with 613. Digby Bunnel with 602 and Dale Bastian with 598 all moved to the board in the Class "A" Singles. This week-end there will be' but one team from Salem making the trek to Portland. Bob Ebersole and his Ale & Quail Society bowling as Woodry Furniture will be making their assault on the leaders in Class B today and tomorrow. DISA & DATA ... A few weeks ago Frank Samuelson of the Portland General Electric Team fired an all-spare 171 game in league. Not unusual, you aay? Then take-a gander at Frank's 128 average. We know a lot of the bigger wheelt here in the city who have never 'shot an all-apare game. ... A week ago in the major leagues Terry Gannon led off for Scotty Stores with 663 and Chet Boyce anchored with 608 and they lost all four points. Good at the top. fair at the bottom, but in between it got ridiculous . . . John Coomler picked the 4-7-10 split in successive frames last week. Now that you have that spare down pat, John, which one are you going to practice on now? ., "A"long standing friendly feud hat developed between Dick Phlppt and Tony Vitlone over the condition, of the pins in their respective houses. The University hat alwayt had topnotch wood but Monday night Dick Phipps barely touched the 4-pin enough to convert the spare. Before be could tay anything Tony hollered over to hint, "Atta boy, Dick, that's the way to protect your new ball and my old Dins." 1 Al Herman of Woodroffe's Poor Boys smashed the wood for a new league high game of 237 in the University Commercial No. 2 League Thursday night. We can hardly call a man shooting like that a poor boy. His team had to mortgage their balls and bags to pay off the turkeys . . . About once a month someone shoots a big game in league and then finds out they were only second high for the night. Last Wednesday night in the Capitol Major Ed Wilkalis checked in with a 2S6 game only to have team-mate Jim Ross top that with a 258. Ed did have a successful evening, however, as his 680 series was easily toDS for the evening and the week . . . Ramage s Beverages one of the doormats of the University Classic, rose up like the wrath of a scorned woman and smashed one of the top teams in the league Monday night. Led by Al Jungling and his 622 series they surprised - their opponents no end. Count like that and handicap too is hard to beat . . . Rounding ramdly into his nre-army service form is H. H "Swede" Anderson who was one of the top keglers locally until his two year vacation . . . 66 to 38 North Gains Tie For Fourth in , - District8 By A. C. Object of the five-man team will be to sample 100 boys and 100 girls to classify them according to a Physical Fitness Index (PFI) as "Oregon's Answer to President Eisenhower." The President recently called at tention to the "deplorable physical condition" of many boys and girls in the country and urged positive action to remedy it To Train Local Tetters The physical fitness program' is designed to identify those boys and girls who are , below the aver age in strength, and to provide ac tivities to develop those who are sub-par. Exercises Not Only Answer Gilmore explained that it is known that just exercises are not always the proper answer to im proving scores of low "PFI" boys and girls. Other causes may be bad living habits, improper diet, sickness, old injuries, physical de fects and emotional disturbances. A follow-up will attempt to lo cate these causes through per sonal interviews, and physical edu cation classes will become more effective as a result, Gilmore con cluded. Oregon is the first slate in the nation to respond to Eisenhower's challenge, it is said.
