"Spike" Briggs, president oft he Detroit Tigers, said today he con sidered a reported "offer" of mofe than two million dollars from his ball club as an "inquiry" and would not discuss it until after the first of the year. Briggs confirmed Tuesday' night a report that a six-man eastern syndicate was "interested" in the Detroit baseball team, a member of the American League. But he said he considered a letter re ceived from the syndicate an in quiry and not an offer. The syndicate, headed by New York insurance executive Cy Block reportedly offered more than two million dollars for the team. While San Francisco retained its No. 1 status last night by downing Wichita 75-65 at Wichita, Kan., Utah saw its No. 3 ranking slightly tarnished when Dayton won a 77-73 decision in the opener of the Ken- third place game to Southern Cali fornia. Utah suffered only two more losses all season. In the other game at Lexington, Kentucky downed Minnesota 72-65 as Bob Burrow collected 17 points. Dayton will be a slight favorite over Kentucky in tonight's till game. Kentucky, ranked ninth na tionally, appears to be recovering after a bad start this year. Ml Bob Zuppke. one of America's fore most football coaches, is hospit alized and in serious condition lift er suffering a stroke last weekend. Zuppke, 76. Illinois coach for 29 seasons before retiring in 1941, was hospitalized last Friday with what physicians called a "cereb ral vascular accident." Dr. J. B. Christie, associated with Cole Hospital, said "You'd call it a hemorrhage or blood clot." Zuppke, who led Illinois to seven football litlcs and was the master of the upset, reportedly suffered paralysis of the right arm and had lost his power of speech. How ever, Zuppke was uttering words Tuesday. Allen Schmidt, scrappy Gervais guard, racked up 33 points, to lead the Cougars to a 62 to 52 victory over Salem Academy in a game played in West Salem Tuesday evening. Halltime score had been 26 to 23 with the Cougars leading. Fourteen field goals and live free throws accounted for the Gervais player's total.
