Salem Mayor Al Loucki. holds the first of a series ot regional meetings plan ned in the stale. Mayor Robert F. White and County Judge Rex Hartley will be among the local government offi cials and interested citizens from Marion. Polk, Linn and Yamhill counties who will be on hand to give their views. . Recommendations for legislation will be made to the 1957 legisla ture on the basis of facts and ideas developed at the hearings. Department heads of the City of Salem are preparing informa tion on problems which Mayor White will present to the interim group. The county judge will also dis cuss local governmental matters I with the committee including land use. regulation matters including zoning regulations in areas adja cent to cities. 'Dick' Urges Tower Action Senator Richard L. Neuberger of Oregon has asked the Civil Aeronautics Administration to start budgetary action aimed at reactivating Salem airport traffic control facilities when flight vol ume reaches required standards. In a letter to F. B. Lee. CAA administrator, the Oregon Senator pointed out that, if present trends in growth of Salein air traffic con tinue, the airport will soon reach the annual minimum of 18.000 flight operations which CAA has established as the standard for op eration of control towers. Neuberg . er urged Lee to include Salem tower operations in the next CAA budget since the agency antici pates attainment of the .standard in the near future. . Neuberger said he believed such action would be warranted by CAA since the minimum figure "would doubtless have been at tained by the time the tower would be recommissioned." New Church at Salem Heights The Salem Heights Baptist Church will begin construction of new house of worship within the next few weeks, according to de cision of the building committee, headed by Ferd Zurcher. Loca tion of the new church will be at 3.S30 Liberty road, property which has been held by the congregation (or more than two years. - ' The new structure will be of low modern type design with a day light basement. The first unit will consist of a temporary sanctuary and a social room in the basement, in addition to several class rooms. The main sanctuary and en larged Sunday school rooms will be included in the second unit. Cost of the project has not been announced.' Some of the work will be undertaken by volunteers. Frank Struble is architect for the job. The Salem Heights church is currently holding its services in the Salem Heights Community hall. Liberty road and Madrona avenue. Legality of 19.",:, Statute Attacked A test case, involving the con stitutionality of statutes passed by the 1953 legislature which author izes the State Tax Commission to require logging and lumbering concerns to produce the records of their purchases of raw mater ials, is, indicated in the filing of a complaint in Marion county cir cuit court. The plaintiff in the case is Pope It Talbot, inc., one of the larger operators of the .northwest who filed a suit against the commis sion asking a determination of the ruling that the commission has the ' right to subpoena records of the. complaining corporation. Back of the litigation is the de sire of the commission to plug some of the leaks which it says exists in the state tax structure.
