STAYTON REPRESENTED IN DERBY l! firmer: 'Korean Cuties Barred by GIs SEOUL I U. S. th Army officers' clubs are quietly shutting their doors to Korean cuties after getting the word from Lt. Gen. John H. Collier, acting Army com mander. Collier gave the verbal order last week. He was a leader in cracking down on U. S. soldiers fraternizing with German women when he commanded at Stuttgart several years ago. An Army spokesman said Tues day the unwritten rule was ordered "to eliminate an undesirable situ ation which was getting entirely out of hand." Army officers have been court ing hundreds of Korean girls and taking them to officially sanc tioned dances ever since the armi stice. Business fell off sharply last week end in the clubs. Two clubs closed permanently. Capital Journal. About one-fcurth of Derby entrants will represent such valley towns as Dallas, Silverton, Albany, Sweet Home, Mt. Angel, Stayton and Gcrvais. Valley area boys will lead off the Saturday morning parade- from the Capital Mai' to downtown High street to Derby Downs for inspection and trial runs. Parade starts at 10 a m Sunday, race starts at 1:30. . Ashland Experimenting With Broadcast System ASHLAND The sound of rolling drums and - militant horns echo ing through the town in the late afternoon is becoming an every day occurrence for Ashland resi dents. The noise comes from the Shake ipearean Festival theater, where technicians are experimenting with the new high fidenity broadcast re corder. The system, consisting of a tape recorder, microphone, amplifier, and four speakers, is the newest and proudest possession of the fes tival staff. Mert Cramer, last year's technical assistant, is spend ing the month in Ashland, working with technical director Frank Sul livan and his staff to set up the equipment and determine the scope of the recorder. According to Cramer, last week's work was only experi mental, determining the range of the equipment, seeing which in struments reproduce well, and showing the singers how their voices must be developed. Most of the music this season will be recorded and reproduced during the shows, except for the battle scenes in ' Macbeth and "Henry VI, part S," and the trum pets in "Timon of Athens". The singing in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" also will be done on the stage. The records will be played back during performances by the tech crew from the light booth un derneath the stage. The loudspeak ers are set up in pairs on either side of the stage. The regular recording sessions begin Tuesday in the high school. The music, though under the super vision of the show's directors, is written and directed by festival music director Bernard Windt. Windt and the three scholarship musicians, Jim Baker, Medford; Clarissa Berning, Redmond, and Martin Bliefernich, Newberg, will form the nucleus of the recording groups, and will be assisted by company members and local mu sicians. Cramer said that the re cording will probably be finished by the end of the week.
