Possible Changes in Gl Home Loan Studied By UNITED PRESS Congressional investigators to day planned an inquiry to deter mine whether changes are needed In the GI home loan program. The. House Veterans Committee called for the investigation after itudying reports on 6JM0 GI loans and coming up with some findings which it called worrisome. It noted that in one area where there were 87 defaults on home loans the defaulting owner in each case was someone other than the GI to whom the government-backed loan originally was made. It also found that in numerous cases, a veteran had sold his home moved away and then discovered months or years later that the buyer had defaulted and the veter an was left holding the bag. There were other cases where veterans defaulted after years of paying on their loans and wound up with a bigger debt than they started with. Frequently the prop erty failed to bring enough to settle the claim. Chairman Olin E. Teague D Tex) said the committee had drawn no conclusions about the findings by its staff "but they cer tainly warrant investigation." Other congressional news: H-Bomb: Dr. Ralph E. Lapp, nu clear physicist, told a Senate civil defense subcommittee Friday he believes the H-bomb exploded by the United States in the Pacific in 1954 was a "revolutionary" one. He said he deduced this from pub lic records on the explosion indi cating there was "fantastically great" radioactivity which an or dinary H-bomb would not have produced. He criticized the Atomic Energy Committee for not stress ing how long such radioactivity persists. Foreign Aid: Sen. John J. Spark man (D-AIa), a member of the GETS AWARD Midshipman Levi G. Bateson, ton of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Bateson of Route 5, Box 382, Sa lem, who has been presented the Marine Corps Association's 1955 Award of Merit as the Univer sity of Colorado NROTC candi date for commission in the U. MacDuffee is the author of prize-winning maga zine articles and a best-selling book about his trips: Chairman Thomas C. Hennings (D-Mo) said the subcommittee has formally or ganized for "an active," hard-hit ting investigation of concrete abuses" of the Bill of Rights.
