At Sperry Plant Again

mates of a total attendance of at
least 15,000 still stands, and pre
parations have been made accord

Mayor Robert F. White will cut
a ribbon to open the shoe at 7
p.m. Again Friday night the show
will open at 7 and on Saturday at
1 p.m. A free specialty show by

day. Hazel Small Dies
After Sudden Illness
Mrs. Hazel Small, resident of
Salem for the past 10 years and
a late resident of 425 South 21st
street, died at a local hospital
Tuesday night. Mrs. Small was
taken to the hospital earlier in the
day after suffering a heart attack
at her home.
Born at Houlton, Maine. July 24,
1894, she was married in that state
May 6, 1917, to Waldo Small, who
survives her. Ten years ago last
December the Smalls came to Sa
lem, where Small has since been
a car salesman.
Mrs. Smal was a member of the
Methodist church in Maine. She al
to was a member of the auxiliary
of World War I veterans, of thelcial dairy type sleers 14.00-18.50

bean futures were strong on the
board of trade most of the time
Thursday and other grains followed
along. Wheat was up more than a
cent at times and soybeans more
than two cents.
There was some export news,
and no rainfall was indicated for
the drier areas of the Southwest,
which were hit by dust storms

governors planned to meet in At
lanta Saturday with representa
tives of the Southern Bell Tele
horte Co. and the striking CIO
Communication Workers of Ameri
ca in an attempt to end the 39-day
telephone strike. The union de
mands arbitration on fringe points
and higher wages. The company
says that a no-strike clause is the
bar to a new contract.
Governors of six Southern states
and representatives of six others
had met in Nashville earlier this
week to discuss the L&N and tele
phone walkouts. Both st r i k e s,
marked by violence, have cut deep
ly into the economy over wide
areas of the South and Southeast.
Unemployment mounted in many
areas because of the rail strike

MONMOUTH Ada Martin. 90,
late resident of 165 East Clay
street, Monmouth, died in a Sa
lem hospital Tuesday afternoon,
April 15, after a long illness.
Mrs. Martin was born at Mores
Corner, Mich., Feb. 19. 1865, and
has bren a resident of Monmouth
since 1948 moving here from
North Dakota.
She is survived by three sons,
William A. Martin of Monmouth,
Ore.: Ray W. Martin of Battle
Creek. Mich., and Harry W. Mar
tin of Inkstcr, N.D., also 11 grand
children and 18 great grandchil
dren. Funeral services will be held
from the chapel of the Smith
Krueger Mortuary. Indepen
dence, Saturday, April 23, at 2
p.m.

was found dead in his crib this

ALBANY Harold H. Hinsdale.
56. died at his home at Jefferson
Wednesday with the funeral to be
held at 2 p.m., Saturday at the
Fisher Funeral home in Albany.
Mr. Hinsdale was born in 1898 in
Onawa, Iowa, and came to Oregon
when a few months old and had
lived in Roseburg, and Albany be
fore going to Jefferson six years
ago.
He married Hazel Davis, Aug.
10, 1929 at Vancouver, Wash., who
survives him as do two sisters,
Opal Hartramps, Eugene and Lois
Stesney, Salem; and three brothers,
Vernon and Wendell Hinsdale, both
of Portland, and George, Roseburg,
and His parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.
D. Hinsdale, Cornelius.
James E. Royce
WOODBURN - James E. Royse,
89, died Tuesday, April 19 at a
Woodburn nursing home where he
had been for the past two weeks.
He was born in Maysville, Ken.,
Dec. 27, 1865, and came to Oregon
from Oklahoma about 10 years ago,
making his home with a son, Eu
gene Royse, at 880 Young St.,
Woodburn. He was a member of
the Methodist church at Kingfisher,
Okla.
Survivors include two sons, Eu
gene of Woodburn and James of
Van Nuys, Calif.; one daughter,
Betty Bixler, Schenectadv, N. Y.:
four grandchildren and three great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at
2 p.m. Thursday at the Ring-Corn-wcll
chapel here with Rev. Ormal
B. Trick of the Methodist church
officiating. Final rites will be at
Kingfisher, Okla.
