Currant Flies
Now Emerging
First spray or dust for Willam
ette valley currant and gooseberry
naa been recommended as soon as
possible.
First yellow- currant flies have
been found in the two emergence
cages at the C. E. Bradley farm at
at Hubbard. The first flies were
discovered Tuesday bv Bradley who
has been making daily checks ofj
the cages since they were errect-1
ed April 5.
County Extension Agent D. L.
Rasmussen and Robert W. Kvery,
Oregon State College entomolosy
specialist, recommended a spray
containing 3 pounds, 50 per cent
methoxychlor wettable powder in i
too gallons of water. Growers with
a leaf spot problem can mix me
thoxychlor in Bordeaux mixture:
8 8-1 or add 2 pound Captan or I
2 pounds Ferbam to 100 gallons of
methoxychlor spray. I
After the first spray has been:
applied growers should apply ad
ditional spray at not more than 7
to 10 day intervals until the berries
are harvested with additional
sprays after heavy rains.
It is pointed out that it is also
important that the grower spray
not only the currant and goose
berry bushes but also interplanted
trees as well as trees, brush and
other plants adjoining the berry
field.
Backyard gardeners having a
bush or two may find it practical
to completely cover their bushes
with cheese cloth to prevent the

skin of the fruit.
Those preferring a dusting pro
gram are recommended to a five
per cent methoxychlor dust using
30 to 35 pounds of the dust per
acre.
