Afterward entertainer Con nie Boswell sang "We Came In on a Wing and t Prayer." The passengers got a shaking up but nothing worse when the nose wheel of an American Air lines DC7 collapsed on landing at Midway Airport. The plane was on a nonstop flight from Los Angeles to New York when one engine began sput tering east ot Chicago. Capt. R. A. Patterson, of Los Anqeles. headed the ship back to Chicago for a landing. Miss Boswell, who sang from a wheel chair she is a polio crip pleas one of the Boswell Sisters, and her husband Harry Leedy were on their way to New York to make records. The passengers continued to New York in a later plane. The first day of spring finds Roberta Browne popping out with sun umbrella and bathing suit on a San Francisco beach. Roberta was dubbed Queen of Redwood Empire (why not Em press?) by resort owners for the occasion. If you can get your eyes past Roberta, that's the Golden Gate Bridge in the back ground.' (UP Telcphoto) Variety of Weather Greets Coming of Spring By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The coming of spring today was cold and soggy between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians. In its favor: It did not have the violent storms that dotted the Weather map yesterday. Equinoctial storms, born of the cold air which had moved as far south as Texas, sprinkled snow over the southwestern and central Great Plains and upper Mississippi Valley. It drizzled in Chicago. The drizzle froze at Oklahoma City. The rain belt stretched from cen tral Oklahoma northeastward through the central Mississippi Valley and eastward through the southern and central Great Lakes region, northern Ohio Valley and Into the central Appalachians. Thunderstorms were bunched from northern Louisiana to central Ken tucky. Precipitation generally ranged from an inch to an inch and a half, but Tupelo, Miss., got 2.49 inches in six hours. Snowfall to the west of the rain area varied from a trace to 2 inches. Even so it represented modera tion from the previous day's bois-. terous exit of winter 3 to 5 inch es of snow in Colorado, western Nebraska and Kansas with near blizzard conditions 'around Love land, Colo.; a series of tornadoes along the Missouri-Arkansas bor der; a windstorm so violent it blew down a circus tent at Uvalde, Tex.; and a 4-inch rain that flooded Pidemont, Mo. The Tornadoes leveled several farm buildings but did not strike heavily populated areas. Only one person was reported injured, al though a family of four was re ported missing. The 400 persons watching the circus at Uvalde escaped without serious injury when the big top col lapsed. Many of the spectators were children. Medal Given Syngman Rhee SEOUL m South Korea's Pres ident Syngman Rhee today re ceived the United States Medal of Freedom with Gold Palm from Gen. John E. Hull, retiring U, S. Far East commander. The citation praised the 79-year-old Rhee for 'conspicuous deter mination and self-subjugation in the interest of his homeland. "He has aided the cause of uni versal democracy and has ad- j vanced the date when a united Ko rea will take its .rightful place among the free nations of the world. n . S. 8th Army commander. 2 Veterans Hospitals in Oregon Need Renovation WASHINGTON UP) A House ' committee- Sunday listed 'veterans " hospitals at Portland and Roseburg 18 as among 56 in the nation needing 1 renovation. : ' ' "The state's three veterans hospitals there also is one at Camp WhiK near Medford were listed as needing $4,191,560 in repairs and modernization. This list of proposed improve ments, prepared by VA headquar ters here, estimates project costs at the three facilities as .follows: Camp White. $276,760; Portland, $2,030,000; Roseburg, $1,884,800. Two improvement projects, the VA list shows, are planned for the year beginning this July 1. This includes acquisition of a sputum cup disposal unit for Port land, costing $11,500, and altera tions and auditions to the kitchen, dining hall and building No. 1 at Roseburg. The latter work is esti mated to cost $523,300. Scheduled in the following year are: Camp White laundry, conver- BRIDE-TO-BE . Jf ' ' VV- :''v4i sion of building No. 235, $250,000. Portland modernization pro gram, $1,383,500. ' a Roseburg therapeutic exercise clinic building, $577,500; incinera tor, $41,000. (Consideration also is being given to construction of paint shop and inflammable stor age building, $31,000, and installa tion of sprinklers in nine build ings, $43.0001. Still unprogrammed for the three Oregon hospitals are the following improvements: Camp White cafeteria counter. $5,000; concrete slab for coal storage, $13,700; greenhouse, $8, 000. Portland additional moderniza tion, including adjustment of the elevator in warehouse building No. 12 to truck body height. $15. 000. and a new laundry building, $620,000. Kmeburg garage addition, S25.000; connecting corridors be tween buildings, S49o,000; chapel, 125 seats, $25,000; water main (convert deadened water-distribution system to loop system), SI 8,000; tool storage building, $6,-000. (UP Telephoto) Gilbert Residence Damaged by Blaze WOODBURN The Interior of the house at 157 Young street oc cupied by the Johnny L. Gilbert family, was gutted by fire about 9 p.m. Saturday. Thought to have been caused by the use cf clean ing fluid in the bathroom, the fire spread so rapidly the family was forced to leave without sav ing any personal possessions or fur niture. Three Woodburn trucks were called and the blaze was brought under control in about an hour. Part of the loss was covered by insurance, according to Gilbert, and the damage was estimated at about $3,000. Cain Admits Charge Not With Proper Foundation WASHINGTON IB Charges that Mon C. Wallgrecn was "soft" toward communism were not based on "precise information," Harry P. Cain said Sunday. The former Republican senator from Washington State, now a member of the Subversives Activ ities Control Board, added in an interview he felt he acted "im properly" in making the charges without personal knowledge and if he had it to do over again would make the accusers "put up or shut up." The "soft" toward communism charge was among several leveled by Cain in 1949 during Senate de bate on Wallgren's nomination as chairman of the National Security uesources Hoard. Wallgren, a Democrat who for merly was senator and governor in Cam s Home state of Washington. denied the charge. Later because of Cain s stiff opposition. Presi dent Truman, at Wallgren's re quest, withdrew, the nomination.
