Forceps Four Will Try to ;. Retain Crovn FOREST GROVE, Ore. The biggest barbershop quartet roundup in the nine-year his tory of Forest Grove's nationally-known songfest mil be held this week when the city turns backt. the clock to the Cay Nineties. Festival dates are February 24-25 26. More than 30 foursomes from three states are signed up for three days of close harmony in memory of the good old days. Seventeen men's quartets are registered to date for the two day mate competition on Fri day and Saturday. Fifteen pet ticoat foursomes will harmonise for the first time on Thursday nieht at 7:30, in the new wom en's contest. Northwest champion ships will be declared, $1350 distrib uted among top quartets, and trophies awarded,, The Forceps Four from the University of Oregon Medical School, Fort land, are the defending cham pions. Three thrill-packed days are In store for quartets and the public. The eight male finalists . will sing Saturday night at 8:30 PST to the nation over the MBS network. School chil dren and adults will be in cos tume throughout the festival. ' Costume and window display contests will be held. A Gay Nineties fair and street parade will be staged on Saturday af ternoon. A public oldtime pan cake feed, street stunts, and other activities will help bring back the turn of the century. The Forest Grove Gleemen are founders and sponsors of the festival. Saniicm Teachers Form Association STAYTON The Santiam Val ley Teachers' association was formed last week when teachers from Detroit to Jefferson met in Stayton. Richard Gwillim of Aumsville Is temporary chairman with Don na Hansen, also of Aumsville, aecretary. The group was asked to sup port the candidacy of Gladys Bel den, Stayton, for secretary of the Department of Classroom Teach ers, at the election during the OEA convention in Portland, March 17-19. Rep. Maurine Neuberger spoke to the prnuD nri legislation intro duced into the House and the Senate. Her talk was on legisla tion of particular interest to edu cation, and answered questions of general interest The basic school support bill is one of the issue of particular interest in the pres ent session, i Various tax propos als also were discussed.
