6-(Sec. 2)-Capital Journal, Salem, Ore,, Fri,, Jan, 21, 1955 DENNIS THE MENACE By Ketcham yff n i.. i 'i m&mm m memoes: Police, Fire Tests Planned The City Civil Service Commis sion hai announced that promo tional examinations for captain jnd battalion chief in the Salem fire department and entrance ex aminations for patrolman in the police department will be Riven during the week of February 14. Purpose of the examinations is to establish eligibility lists. Fire Chief E. L. Smith and Police Chief Clyde A. Warren had re quested the examinations be held. There is at present no vacancy for the fire department positoins hut with the retirement of Capt. Arthur White on April a cap tain's job will become vacant. Early action is planned by the commission on revisions to the city civil service by-laws. Regu lations dealing with outside em ployment and with political activ ity by civil service employets arc attracting principal interest in the by-law revision plans. Under present regulations civil service employes cannot cam paign for either measures or can didates. It is expected that this policy may be liberalized to per mit campaigning on measures hut not on candidates. The commission has also ac cented the resignation from the fire department of Harold May- nard, Sr. Wheof Fxpor f Drop Show Export movement of wheat out of Portland during the last six months of 1054 the first half of the crop year dropped to 3, 826,946 bushels. This compares with 10,350,279 bushels in the amc period of 1953 and is the smallest export movement since the first half of 1MB. The fig ures arc from the semi-annual report of the division of grain inspection of the stale depart ment of agriculture. Export movement of barley, on the other hand, took a Rood up turn, says T. Ralph Harry, divi sion chief. Barley loaded at Port land ports for export totaled 1, 606,977 bushels, compared with 33,320 bushels in the last half of 1953. Grain inspection reports also reflect a small export move ment of flaxseed, 16,029 bushels. Wheat received at Portland graded 10.5 per cent simittv and carried 27.3 per cent foul dock age. Smut was greater, foul dock age less than a year nun. No inspections of export flour I were recorded, either at l'ort la nd ! man class of 1715 is 14 percent or Astoria. Enrollment is now bushels of wheat moving into! the highest since 1950-51 when Kovernment storage, mostly the i the Korean war began reducing mothball fleet. This represented it. 7,345,094 bushels inspected at : Itrief talks were also made by Portland and 1,831,275 at Astoria. Ted Carlson, assistant alumni Almost twice as much incom-1 secretary, and Stan Hlinkhorn, ing wheat 4.024.946 bushels 'student body president. Incom-! with Duke at the nixie basket ing wheat Inspections at I'endle- hall tournament in North Caro ton also were higher--9tU,334 lina a year ago were shown, .lark bushels compared with 534,401 a lticketts, president of the club, year earlier. Bean, pea and flour presided, inspections reported bv the Pendleton branch office were down. (iraiti receipt" at Portland from points east of the Hocky moun tains in the last half of 1954 reached 2940 carloads, romparrd with 12117 a year ago. Sixteen reactors were found in the 7,086 cattle tested in Polk county and 18 among the 13,800 tested in Linn county. Yamhill counly had 55 reactors among its 13,684 cattle which were tested. In Marion county 361 calves were vaccinated against the dis ease, 211 in Polk county, 227 in Linn county and 197 in Yamhill county. The report was released by Dr. A. G. Beagle, Portland, veterinar ian in charge of the federal ani mal disease eradication branch. and M. E. Knickerbocker, Salem, chief of the division of animal industry of the state department of agriculture. The 1954 report shows 295,107 ,,i ... i i'i , ll,,n i cattle were tested and that f20 oi mem, or jusi over one-nan 01 one per cent, reacted. The actual : reactor percentage figure is 0,548. It represents a tlrop from I the 0.U5 per cent of last year when 1,838 reactors were found in 281,003 beef and dairy ani mals tested. Not a sin ale reactor was found in Hood River county. Only three wore found in each Wasco and Lake counties; four each in Sher man and Josephine counties; six in Crook county; and eight in Gilliam counly. Because of the small number of cattle tested in some of these counlies. however. the percent nee reactors there ran above the state average. Herds comine under thf hrn- cellosis testing program totaled zn.oui. in 5,2m of these herds 74,868 calves were vaccinated last year. Calf hood vaccination is one phase of the control measures. During the vear. the federal- state brucellosis testing laborato ry was moved from Corvallis to balcm and as a result laboratory reports on the field testing were stepped up. 05C Enrollment 11 Pet.
