Bearcats Hope for Upset of San Diego Tonight : ; ' ASSOCIATED PRESS Salem, Ore., Tuesday, December 21, 1954 Section IV, Page 1 : 1 1 AFIELD By BOB BROWN i imm CLIMB 0 BOARD, DUCK HUNTERS Since the first meeting of the newly formed Sprig Chapter of the Oregon Duck Hunter's association last Friday, we've been contacted personally by interested duck hunters all over the mid Willamete valley. Seems the need for such a club is so apparent that shotgunners are eager to climb aboard. The interest does not seem to be restricted to any one class of hunters; free-lancers and pond-owners are both concerned with the waterfowl conditions, and want to know what can be done to improve the situation. They all want a part in the new organization. The next meeting will be held at the Ike Walton hall at 8 p.m. next Tuesday, Dec. 28. We expect a big turnout to elect otficers I 1 ' "SPRIG CHAPTER" NAMED and start the ball rolling. We've reserved the large room for the occasion, rather than the smaller basement room the "pioneer" meeting was held in. Dues for the new organliation will be only S2.50 per year, to prospective members need have no fear of having to lay out much folding green. In this club, personal interest and cooperation will be more Important than money . . . We have every reason to believe that, in a few short years, this club will have made some extremely constructive efforts in behalf of improving duckhunting and duck-hunters. BEAR CREEK MUDDIED BY LOGGING We mentioned in this column last week that the muddying of Salmon river still continues, as the result of logging on Slick Rock creek. We find that the same situation also prevail on nearby Bear Creek. Several anglers have called us, wanting to know what can be done to stop this abuse. Not only does the dragging of logs across the stream spoil the downstream fishing, but It ruins the spawning beds. What is needed is a law with some teeth in it, a law that will insist that logs be skidded across streams on bridges, rather than be dragged through the stream itself. Enough personal calls to our state legislators might interest one of them enough to develop and sponsor such a bill. Its passage would win them thousands of friends among the sportsmen of the state. -AiJEHM 'Operation Tin Can' Tonight at Armory A special Christmas wrestling card tonight at the Salem Armo ry will be of benefit for some needy families in Salem, for it will be "Operation Tin Can" to admit women and .hildrei for a donation of canned goods. Matchmaker Ellon Owen has arranged a natural tag team match when the fans get inside, Leo Wallick and Kurt von Pop penheim trying their rough wares on Luis Martinez and Dick Torio in thcine-hour main event. Their problem will be to catch the slip pery eels and apply their dirty tactics. The semi-final, best two out of three falls, is between Ivan Kam eroff and the crowd's favorite, Maurice LaChapcllc, the lad with the reverse dcathlock and surf board holds. Coach John Lewis has made a change in a forward spot to in crease the reach of his Bearcats, starting Tom Gooding at 6-4 in place of Dick Hoy at 6-0. Every rebound and every point will be needed, Lewis believes. Latest comparative score was San Diego's 10-point victory over College of Puget Sound last night, a team which lost an overtime thriller to Willamette one night and by 15 points the next night. The Aztecs, however, have defeated Seattle University on their 15-day tour of the Northwest which ends tonight. Visitor's Center 6-6 Opposing Neil Causbie. 6-7 Wil lamette center, will be Noel Mick elsen, 6-6. Tony Pinkins, San Diego forward, led his team last night with 19 points. San Diego Nips Loggers by 81-71 TACOMA lifl San Diego State College outscored College of Pu get Sound in the second half Mon day night to win their non-conference basketball game, 81-71. The CPS' loggers led through most of the first half, twice by a margin of seven points. The visit ing Aztecs tied the score 39-39 at the half, and pulled away early in the second period. Scoring honors were shared bv Tony I'uikins of San Diego and John Barnett of CPS, who bucket ed 19 points apiece. C. 1st Round Favorites By JOHN GIRFFIN United Press Sports Writer If high-riding Kentucky needs any danger warning about its tour nament clash with upset-happy Utah tonight, it need only look at the wave of disaster that, struck down all four first-round favorites in the All-College Tournament at Kansas City. Ousted in All-College surprises Monday night were Wyoming and Wichita, both nationally ranked powers, the always-strong Okla homa and tall and rugged Hous ton. Kentucky, playing host in its own Holiday Tournament at Lexington. Ky., collides in the first round there tonight with Utah, the same hot-shooting club that upset La Saile on Saturday night and knocked it right out of the No. 1 National ranking. Kentucky will be risking two streaks, a 28-game winning skein and a 126-game home court winning streak, and Coach Adolph Rupp will be seek ing the 500th win of his career. Oddly enough, LaSalle will be rooting for Utah to register an other big win. LaSalle is favored over Southern California in to nights' other first-round game and is hoping for a second shot at Utah in Wednesday night's finale. GW Upsets Okies George Washington, reigning champion of the Southern Confer ence, upset the Oklahoma Aggies, defending champs of the Missouri Valley Conference, 56-46 in the fea ture game of Monday s All-College opening program. I he Aggies, de fending and 11-time champions of this tournament, trailed all the way after the first two minutes Walt Devlin and Joe Holup scored 20 points each for George Washington. Wyoming, ranked 15th nationally was beaten by Tulsa, 69-64, in a ding-dong battle that saw the score tied 35 limes. Bob Patterson and Dick Courier were almost -the whole Tulsa attack with 29 and 24 points respectively. Wichita. ranked 19th nationally, took a 94-75 drubbing from San Francisco, which raced to a 25-3 lead in the opening minutes .and had the game s high scorer in Jerry Mullen with 29 points. Oklahoma City downed Houston, 72-65, although it couldn't stop Houston's 7-foot cen ter, Don Boldcbuck. who tallied 28 points and snared 24 rebounds. City went into the game with a 1-3 record, Houston with 5-1. In second-round games tonight. San Francisco plays Oklahoma City and Tulsa meets George Washington. Other Ranked Teams Win Four other nationally ranked teams lluquesne 'No. 10', Cin cinnati 'No. 13i, Louisville 'No. 17i, and Alabama 'No. 19 1 scored impressive wins in non- Jerry McCallister, Willamette university guard, doesn't let his "small" site (5-10) tournament games. Duquesne ran its record to five victories in si- starts by whipping St. Francis (Pa.), 71-58. Cincinnati made it 7-for-7 by trouncing Col lege of Pacific, 97-59. Louisville won another intersectional clash just as easily, beating Oregon, 101 72. And Alabama followed up its title triumph in the Birmingham Classic tournament by beating Ne braska, 88-76, as Jerry Harper tal lied 28 points. In other games: Ronnie Mayer's 30 points led Duke to a 90-68 tri umph over Pittsburgh: Frank Eh mann tallied 30 for Northwestern in 83-66 decision over Louisiana State; Bradley, 11 points down with eight minutes lett, rained to beat Wayne, 72-68; Ohio U. beat Loyola (III.), 72-70, on Dick Garrison's driving layup with seven seconds left; Tulane downed Wisconsin, 69- 66, as Hal Cervini scored 20; Bart Johnson of Utah State scored 33 in 80-61 win over Baylor to set his six-game average at 27 points; Bobby Thym s 28 points led Van- derbilt to a 94-67 win over Texas; South Carolina edged Georgia Tech 69-67; Memphis State defeated Texas Tech, last year's Border Conference champion, 75-66; Michi gan trounced Denver, 104-77. Seattle U. at O.S.C. Tonmht CORVALLIS (UP)-Seattle Uni versity makes its only scheduled Corvallis appearance of the season tonight against Oregon State in a non-conference basketball game. It is Oregon State's last home pre-season game before the con ference opener against Washington State Jan. 7. The starting time for the same has been changed from the cus tomary 8 to 8:15 with the junior varsity contest starting at 6:45 instead of 6:15. The doors to the gymnasium open at 6:30. Dick Ballantyne's Saxons down ed the Spartans 50-43 earlier in the season at Hillsboro. Satur day South Salem rolled to 78-56 win over Roosevelt of Portland. All Senior Lineup The starting line-up for the Saxons will probably be the same as Saturday night with Dan Luby and Phil' Burkland at the for wards, Bob Wulf at center, and Bob Foreman and Neal Scheidel at the guards. All are seniors. For the visitors the probable starters are Ralph Hanson and George Rushlow at the forwards, Wayne Bostad at center, and Chuck Cota and Dick Frantz at the guards. Tonight's preliminary game matches the Soth Salem junior varsity, undefeated in five games, and the Hillsboro JV's. Bob Metzger's' Saxons scored a 72-14 win over Hillsboro in the first game between the two teams. After tonight South Salem will be idle until Jan. 4 when they travel to Portland to play Benson tech. Shopping Center Sax Matmen Drop Contest A strong Oregon City high school wrestling team defeated South Salem High, 28-19, in match here Monday night by tak ing eight of 13 matches. Three competitors were pinned, two of them by Oregon City en tries. Upset of the evening was the pinning of Laync Caswell of South Salem, a letterman. The Saxons won their first outing against Dallas last week. Next match will be January 6 at Mo lalla. Coach Hank Juran said that his leading wrestlers to date are Dean Vanek, John Cummings, Harry Juul and Herb Juran. Two of his wrestlers have never grappled before Richard Davis -and Bill McDonald. Gresham, coached by Bud Monncs, claims to lack height this year after losing Dave Gardner and Jim Jenkins from the team which posted a 22-5 record and placed 10th in the state Class A. tourney. But returning are Cliff Shclton, ace rebounding center; Ken Snyder, guard, and Bob Graham, forward, plus seven oth ers from the 1953-54 squad, not all lettcrmen. "They have us on experience by a-whole lot," Hunt said, point ing to his one letterman, center Jim Whitmire. Nevertheless, the Vikings will be out for their fourth victory in six games and have been practicing on improv ing their offense being built around four juniors.
