Besides haviag a brain with a built-in library, he can Hip through a pack of cards and memorize their sequence,, glance through a maga zine and tell you later the page number on which every ad and article appears, or remember a given list of 100 strange objects in sequence, forward or backward. He has been teaching and study ing the processes of memory for 40 years and claims that in 10 easy lessons he can limber up an aver age memory so its owner can pick telephone numbers, dates, names, figures and facts off mental hooks just like hats. "The memory is like a muscle. It has to be exercised. The more it is exercised the better it works," he said. A good many of the 30,000 stu dents who have taken Furst's memory course can almost equal him in mental acrobatic?, but most of them were interested in improv- German Navy Readies for Sea BREMERHAVEN, Germany H A West German navy will be able to take to the seas 24 hours after final ratification of the London re armament agreement thanks to the U. S. Navy. It won't be much of a fleet at first, only some mine sweepers, tenders, oilers and small patrol craft. Nevertheless it will be a navy. Under the London agreement, re armed Germany would be limited to 20,000 naval personnel. Warships must be 3,000 tons or less. There is no 3000-ton vessel for the new navy available. But a fleet of rebuilt German mine sweepers now waits Tor ratification's X-day. These ships have been operating with German crews but under the American flag for two years. Readiness of West Germany to step into its own sea role has been made possible by a quiet program instituted in 1952 by the U.S. Navy and a handlul ot its oiticers. HUBBARD PIE SOCIAL HUBBARD The Mary-Martha circle of the Hubbard Community church is sponsoring the annual autumn pie social at Fellowship House Friday evening. Oct. 22. Homemade pie will be served with coffee or tea from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for practical reasons. The memory coach is especially proud of a bedspread salesman from Paterson, N.J., who is a Furst alumnus, when his firm is sued a catalog containing 73 new designs the salesman memorized the style number, price and page number ot epen item. When the new line was unveiled, the salesman astounded his boss by I giving a machine-gun recital of the details like a tobacco auctioneer. Other successful students have! included an advertising solicitor ' who memorized the space rates of seven New York newspapers and uiree on Long Island, and a whole-. sale drug official who stored in his head the number of drugstores in; every American city. i I have found an unusual differ-1 ence between men and women when it comes to memory," Furst said. "Men are logical, women imaginative. Men remember numbers and dates best, while women are better at remembering faces, descriptions and colors." However, there are exceptions. New York police picked up a woman on charges of bookmaking not long ago and were surprised when they couldn't find any betting slips in her apartment. "I don't make out any slips," she explained. "I keep them all in my head. I took Dr. Furst's mem ory course." Montgomery of the Cincinnati Child Welfare Service said high school courses in driving should emphasize attitudes over the teaching of mechanical skills.
