It's Still a Honeymoon

dedicated English nurse set sail
for the Crimea, where Britain and
France were at war with Russia.
Reports of suffering among the
sick and wounded soldiers had
aroused Britain's secretary of war,
Sidney Herbert. He sent the nurse
Florence Nightingale on a his
toric mission of mercy.

hospitals dropped from 42 per cent
to 2 per cent.
Among her staff of nurses were

Roman Catholic convent estab
lished in England after the refor
mation. Bernard Cardinal Griffin,
archbishop of Westminster, Brit
ain's leading Catholic churchman,
has scheduled a high mass in their
memory.
After the Crimean War, Miss
Nightingale relumed to England
and turned her battle-tested talents
to reform of civilian hospital care.
In 1IK17, when she was 87, she
was awarded the Order of Merit,
one of Britain's highest honors.
Three years later the nurse whose
name became a legend in her life
time died in her London home.

by state and local governments

The Census Bureau said the in
crease in spending during fiscal
1953 was about the .same for state
and for local mostly municipal
governments. State and local outlays for .high
ways and for education each in
creased about a billion dollars,
but spending for sanitation serv
ices, public housing, natural re
sources, general relief payments,
state unemployment benefits and
state veterans' bonuses all de
clined. The Census Bureau said state
and local governments during
i their fiscal 1953 years collected
taxes and other revenues amount
ing to nearly 39 Vi billion dollars.
Also, they received federal aid
amounting to just under 3 billion
dollars, nearly all of it to the
states. Thus, total revenue to slate
and local governments including
federal aid, came to approximate
ly 33 A billion dollars, slightly
more than their total spending.
The federal government ran a
deficit of nearly 9V4 billion dol
lars in the same year.

Only twice has Audrey ventur
ed into Rome. Both times fans
swarmed around her. She return
ed pale and nervous and wants
to make no more visits to the city.
Busy- with a new film, her hus
band normally gets home in the
late evening. They discourage
callers and their only guests have
been a few Roman aristocrats who
live in nearby villas.
The lease on the villa expires at
the end of this month and with
it the honeymoon ends. Miss Hep
burn will go to her native Hol
land to raise funds for war vet
erans. Her husband will accom
pany her if he can finish his
movie in time.

WOGDBURN Mr. and Mrs.
George Rogers of Woodburn,
Route 1, returned last week from
a month's motor trip, going is
far as Iowa where they visited
with relatives. On the return trip
they spent a week in Jerome,
Idaho, with Mrs. Rogers' parents,

and attended the golden wedding
anniversary of the Smiths. They
went through 11 states during
their trip.
