Muder for the week-end of July 18 were her two nieces, Miss Jessie McMillan, supervisor of Humbolt Community hospital, Eureka, Calif., and Miss Joan Mc Millan, student at Seattle Bible College. Mrs. Muder gave a din ner for the girls on Monday and had her daughter, Mary Carter of McMlnnville, as another guest. Jerry Yergen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Yerger is home on navy leave. He has been on the SS Essex and spent time in the waters around Japan. He arrived July 14 and will report at San Diego August 3. He Is scheduled to he sent to school in Chicago and then will probably go on board snip again. John Driever has been confined to his son's home because of Ill ness. He is able to be up and about again. Dr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson of Dayton, Ohio,1 who have been va cationing in Canada, en route home stopped to see their cousin, Mrs. Grace Bishop. Mrs. Bishop, mother ot Mrs. Harmon Yeary of Fargo, has been seriously ill for the past several weeks, but is now improved. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pickens and daughter of Salem spent Sunday, July ib, with Mrs. Lonn Gicsy. Roy Driever. Donald farmer, suffered a sprained ankle Monday and went to Canby for X-rays. Sunday for Chicago to visit two sisters, Mrs. Alice Lindsay and Mrs. Emma Sutton. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Johnson anC daughter Sharon, Caldwell, Idaho, spent several days last week at the Elmer Stewart home. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Little and daughter Veronica, Los Angeles, Calif., have been guests of his BALLSTON Kirby Snider and John Powell left for a trip to their former home In Oklahoma and will move their household goods on the way back. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown and two children have returned from a two months trip -through Oklahoma and other midwest states. Howard Shafer Is recuperating at his home following major sur gery at McMlnnville hospital. Mrs. J. E. Recce and Mrs. John Focht visited Mrs. Catherine sister, Mrs. Margarot Clise, andtHaynet at the Corvallis Rett left Saturday for Seattle, accom panied by Mrs. Clise. John E. Haines, ton of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. -Haines, hat been ordered to report for duty at the Naval hospital at Bethesda, Md. August 24. He has been stationed at Tongue Point and with his wife and two children visited his par ents last week. Mervin Haun, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Haun, inducted into the service July 12, is stationed at Camp Ord, California. Ing wald Nelson of Junction City, Linn county, Oregon, is to meet with the Silverton Christian church members as ireker Fri day in a special sermon. All mem bers are requested to attend, Since the resignation of the Rev. Arthur Bates in May, the in terim minister, the Rev. Arlo B. The same size lights will be placed at the corner of 2nd and J and on the south hide of J between 2nd and the grade school. New 100-watt lights are to be placed at 6th and F, 1st and H. 1st andll, three on G street east of pacific highway and one on J street east of the highway. A tree will be removed at 2nd and D which now blocks the light there. HUBBARD Trees cut in the Hubbard city park to thin the growth have been returned to the park in form of picnic tables and benches. Five new tables were placed in the park Sunday morn ing benealh the tiees. A large sand box has been placed there also. Playgrounds equipment is forthcoming in the near future for the park. GATES Carol Andreassen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Andreassen, was selected from a group of eight high tchool girls as the Gates candidate for queen of the Stayton Bean Festival at the Gates Woman's club meeting Thursday. Each girl spoke three minutes on beans. They were judged on person ality, stage presence and appear ance by members of the club. Loretta Stalhman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Stalhman, Was a close second. Other contestants were Anna Howell, Donalee Oli ver, Helen Johnson, Lois ,vans, Ellen Chance and Patty Stewart An auction by the club as a means of raising money for the building fund was discussed. It was decided to ask contributions of articles for auction from mem bers of the community interested in seeing the clubhouse complet ed. Date of the auction will be announced later. Mrs. Philip Hess conducted the business session. Mrs. Phillip Cann, Mrs. Walter Brisbin, Mrs. Velma Carey and Mrs. Margaret disc, hostesses, served the large group of members and guests in attendance. Next meeting will be Thursday night, August 19. L. T. Henncss, Gates' oldest citizen, suffered a heart attack a week ago. He is reported to be up and around again and outside. Mr. Henncss will observe his 100th birthday anniversary tcmbcr 2D. Mrs. Pat Adams was brought 1 home from the Salem Memorial Home last week and found her not so well. Orlo Palmer, daughter Janet, and Pal mer't titter, Ollie Mae Ross of Salem have just returned from a joint business and pleasure trip east. They drove to Lima, Ohio, to get the new Brooks school bus; visiting relatives and friends in Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Earle Coburn has gone to Atlanta, Ga., where she will accompany her daughter, Mrs. Carl Rasaka, and grand daughter Julie back to the coast. Rasaka recently was graduated from the army automotive school and will be sent to the Far East. Mrs. Coburn and her daughter will drive west. Mrt. Coburn went east by airplane. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rice of Lin coln, Nebr., who has been visiting here for a week with Mrs. F. R. Johnston and Mrs. Jane Mills, returned home Saturday. Christian Women's Fellowship met July 15 at the Christian church under leadership of the new president, Mrs. Clete Gell. Committee reports were given and projects discussed. The Devotions were on "Prayer," and several members 'assisted Mrs. Harry Sherman. Lesson study was by Mrs. Nelle Coburn and Mrs. Jose phine Taylor, "Round the World in Missions." UNIONVALE Mr. and Mrt. Don Schindler of Renton, Wash., were recent guests of hi uncle and aunt, Mr, .and Mrs. George W. Strawn, en route to the coast.. Rev. and Mrs. Clvde Dollar and Richard and her parents, Mr. and ham, Ala., were week-end visitors at Taft. While they were away Dr. Kenneth Wesche. dean of seminary at Jennings Lodge, was the Unionvale Evangelical United Brethren speaker when 96 mem bers and friends attended. Mr. and Mrs. John Solberg and daughter Sandra, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Solberg and Walter Solberg were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Noble. Walter Solberg has spent two weeks camping at Trout creek. He remained here to work at the Noble bean harvest.
