Leading the Orcgonians was Herman Abraham, the great fullback who rated Walter Camp's third All-American team in 1916. Time and time again he circled MSC ends or crunched through "All-American" tackles for five to 20 yards. , The Yost mentioned in Rice's poem was, of course, Fielding H. "Hurry-up"- Yost, Michigan U. coach who got beaten the week before by Michigan State, 24-0. The verse was built -around a general comment that "Football in the Far West is at low tide." "THE PACIFIC SLUMP" , How sad to think about the slump That's soaked the distant West! To think how far their teams have dropped . . Below the laureled crest; To think that in that' land along The old Pacific's rim . They haven't any stalwarts left - To play the game with vim; They haven't any team at all From all their ragged hosts" ' , . Except a team that crushed a team That smashed a team of Yost's. Ah, yes, it's sad to think about The old Pacific slump, The way the West has hit the chute And hit it with a bump; But when you speak of things like this In a manner somewhat free, Don't mention it at Michigan Or up at M.A.C.; . WSC that year went to the first regular Rose Bowl fame and defeated Brown, 14-0. The Cougars were coached by W H "Lone Star" Dietz, a colorful coach from Haskell Institute. Oregon State recently got out a small brochure pointing out ' Its athletic facilities as "best in the land," aimed, we guess, at high school graduates, alumni and students about to graduate from high school. It can be proud, all right, for the Coliseum and its 10,500 capacity is among the largest basketball pa vilions in the nation and its new Parker football stadium, fi Danced by donations and not from gate receipts, will scat 27,000 human beings. JAY DEAN DOING OKAY, NATURALLY OSC's first baseman and deluxe basketball player, Jay Dean, apparently can hit the long ball, after all. With Baker in the semi pro Tri-State league, he is hitting .769 with 10 hits in 13 times up. His fielding has been perfect and he hit the longest homer ever smacked in the Baker park, about 400 feet into lift field. He's the Beaver that Yankee Scout Deacon Jones said couldn't hit "the long ball," despite his .451 average in Northern Division games and getting named to the college All-American team at first. ni.nn started the summer season with his hometown semi-pros at Nampa and is reported to have accepted a Baker offer of $425 a month plus room and board. We presume that involves some work in logging camps or lumber yards, but might be just count ing Presto logs. GIANTS COMING TONS OF THEM We can tell that the New York Football Giants are big people. All we had to do n ' s take a look at the equipment that has been arriving at McCiiMoch stadium which will clothe and take care of the giants. Tons of it has come by freight off and on this summer to be ready to issue stuff and things to them when they turn out Sunday. The players themselves are expected to start checking in Friday night and Coach Howell at the same time. We can hardly wait for some of those big tackles to run over us while wc arc taking pictures of them in the next six weeks they will train here. Bill Franks, Sa lem starter, blanked the Tri-City Braves through the first eight innings but then ran into trouble in the ninth. Tonight former Senator .Jack Hemphill will pitch for the Braves and will face Ernie Dom enichelli who has a three won, four lost record for. the season. Game time is 8 p.m. . Last night, after giving up a single to right field to Terry Car roll in the top of the ninth, Brave third baseman, ' Franks pitched two consecutive balls to first sacker .Vic - Buccola.. Manager Hugh Luby apparently figured that -Franks was beginning to tire. Jose Rayle was brought in to put out the embering fire, but seemed to be using gasoline in his extinguisher. Vanni Drives In Run ' , Rayle continued where Franks left off, issuing two more balls to Buccola and sending him to first.' Edo Vanni then hit a ground single to center, scoring Carroll, and Len Tran got on on an error on a ground ball to Carl Bellotti. The next two Brave bat ters, Rube Johnson and Bob Mo niz, each grounded out second to short, each driving in a run on their grounders. Salem's runs came in the sec ond, third, and sixth off ace Brave hurler Don Robertson, who sported a 12-3 record, and off two reliefers in the eighth. In the second frame, Jim Deyo drove in Connie Perez with a double. Perez had gotten on with a ground hit to center. In the third, Mel Krause, who had sin gled himself to first, and moved to second with a stolen base, legged it all the way home with out hesitation when Bellotti weakly grounded out to the first oaseman Gene Tanselli ' drove in Carl Bellotti in the sixth with a slnele to left after Bellotti had slnnled to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice by, Bob Kel logg. Big Eighth Inning The Senators' big eighth in ning, which' eventually proved the margin of victory, started as Bellotti singled to left off relief er Dale Thomason. Bellotti went to second with a stolen base, Kel logg got to first safely on a bunt hit and both runners advanced on 'a wild pitch. Tanselli then hit a sacrifice fly to center scor ing Bellotti, and Kellogg scored on a triple to center by Perez. That was all for Thomason and Vanni brought in Bill Thomp- kins, who hit Harry Warner with his first pitch. Dennis Luby then hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Perez after the catch. Last night's game was preced ed by an announcement that Um pire Bogle had informed the management that he would take under consideration the forfei ture of the game to the visiting 1 ball team if any more firecrack ers were thrown onto the playing field. Tuesday night the umpires were harassed by two such July 4th leftovers being tossed on the field while Tri-City batters were at the plate. None appeared Wednesday. Umpires Draw Fire Also added to the umps' woes were the numerous beefs regis tered obstreperously by players of both teams at various times during the game. Mel Krause was the victim of the thumb in one of the more heated disputes, aft er he tried vainly to convince plate umpire Bogle that he had slid safely in third on a play in the seventh when Franks had at tempted to sacrifice Krause from first to second. Krause apparent ly decided to just keen aoine on the- play and was "out" at the third base sack. The two umpires said after the game that the considerable amount of razzing they got from the fans during the tilt last night didn't bother them in the least, and that they wished that there were 5,000 there doing it instead of the sparse crowds nf late. Burkland Wins 11th Ball Game Burkland Lumber won its 11th game against one loss in the City League Softball action last night as they downed the YMCA 6-4 be hind the one-hit pitching of Vern Collins. , . In the other City league game at Phillips Field Kay Woolen edged a fast-coming Randle Oil team 6-4. In the lone Industrial league game last night the National Guard slugged out a 15-9 win over Kcizer Electric. The YMCA scored a single run in the first inning on the catcher's errors and then added one more in the second on three walks andtyrf tin enur. Burkland came back with two in the bottom oi tne seconu as Don Vandevort and Jim Moore had singled and the YMCA com mitted two errors. The league-leaders went ahead in the game 3-2 in the third with one run on an error and a hit by Bennett. They added two in fifth and one in the sixth while the "Y" was getting its final two runs in the seventh. Kay Woolen had a big six-run third inning and then held off Randle Oil rallies to win 6-4. Ran dle scored single runs in the first, third, sixth, and seventh innings. Homers by Ed Warrcnburg and Howard Walker helped the Na tional Guard down Keizcr Electric 15-9. It was the third straight win for the National Guard after thev lost their first three. Ray Phillins homered for the losers. Jaekgan leaelera By Ham Fisher Victoria Regains First Beating Lewiston 7-4 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Western International Base ball League's three Canadian clubs took the measure of teams from south of the border Wednes day night. Tictoria shellacked Lewiston 7-4 to regain exclusive possession of tirst place in the standings: Van couver walloped Wenatchee 7-1, and Edmonton whipped Yakima Salem beat Tri-City 6-3 to round out rfce evening's activities. The veteran Pete Hernandez. recently sent down from Seattle of the Pacific Coast League, showed the way as Vancouver posted the second win of the three game series with Wenatchee. Hernandez scattered six hits. struck out 12 and didn't walk a man while his mates pounded out 12 sateues olf BUly Joe Waters. Six were for extra bases, includ ing Bob Wellman's 17th home run of the season. WenatcheeZs only ran came in the fourth on two singles and sacrifice fly. Don Lundberg homered in the ninth inning with two aboard to save the day for Victoria. Lewis ton went ahead 4-3 in the eighth on a triple by Bob Williams and John Cameron's single. With two out in the ninth. Lundbers lifted John Marshall's first pitch out of tne parit. it was bis 12th homer of the season. New Golf Links To Be Built at Portland in '55 PORTLAND (fl A new muni cipal golf course is planned for Portland late next year, replacing the West Hills course, which is to be turned into a zoo site. The course will be in the fast- growing Southwest Portland area. Actually it will be a few miles out side the city limits, the site being seven miles from the City Hall. The 18-hole course is planned for 155-acre tract near Progress, be tween Beaverton and Tigard. The City Council plans to take options on the tract at once.
