Hood it one of the outstanding scenic rtrctlont of the nation, end Timber line lodge (above) at the 6,000-foot level it a popular all-year center of activities. The lodge was dedicated by the late Pres ident Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937. It is all but buried in snow during winter months but roads almost always are open to It, A mile-long chair lift over precipitous gorges is a feature of its entertainment facilities. (About 90 miles northeast of Salem via Oregon City and a few miles off Highway 26). For Places to Go, Beaver State Has 'Em; ! Sea Shore, Mountains Beckon Travellers While many sections of the na tion are sizzling in summer heat, nature, is providing Oregon vis itors with air-condidtioned days ' and cool nights and a wealth of vacation variety. For those who like to get off the beaten track or not, Oregon has a .variety of vacationlands "away from it all." ' ' Along ' the 400-mile . Pacific Ocean coastline in Oregon' are many retreats for campers, fish ermen and vacationers where re laxation and recreation are the order of the holiday. Just off the coast, but near enough for easy access are several forest camps where life is easy in the great outdoors. Six state parks, have been opened for camping on the coast for this season, too. And many of the fishing resorts are located on the coastal streams, off the beaten track, but easily ac cessible by automobile and paved highways. Memorable Trip On the southwestern coast, a trip by mail launch from Gold Beach to Agness is never-to-be-forgotten. This trip takes the visitor , 32 miles up the Rogue River into a primitive hinterland accessible only by boat. A longer boat trip, consuming five days, may be taken from Grants Pass to the sea. Forest roads and forest camps in the southwestern part of Ore gon take visitors well into virgin territory where hiking, exploring, and horseback riding make happy holidays. The Siskiyou and Rogue River National Forests have many forest camps where the scent of fresh pine and fir forests give zest to vacation days. Those who wish modern accommodations nearby will find these too. GUIDED TOUR AVAILABLE Such nationally famous spots as Oregon Caves and Crater Lake take Oregon visitors into the quiet of mountain fastnesses where wild animals seek refuge and become friends to the people who come to visit them. In these two national areas, too, are found some of the wonders of nature which everyone is privileged to see and enjoy. The guided tour through the Oregon Caves is both interesting and instructive. Ac commodations are available at the Chateau there. Crater Lake is the deepest of deep blues, set in the cauldron of an ancient volcano, 2,000 feet deep and over a mile high at water level. Wizard Island, an island within the lake is a perfect volcano in itself. Friendly rang ers lecture daily, explaining the formaiton of this very unusual and beauliiui atuaenui. PACK TRIPS OFFERED Along the seven Oregon Cas cade Mountain passes arc side roads to forest camp havens where lake and stream fishing, hiking and horseback riding are always a pleasure. Several pack stations in the Cascades offer pack trips along the Skyline Trail and into the far reaches of the mountains and to back country lakes. For those who like their holi days away from it all, but want accommodations, modern facili ties and resorts are found throughout the Cascades on easy-to-travel highways. The grest high plateau range lands of Central and Eastern Ore gon are filled with the romanti cism of the Old West Here are lound modern vacation facilities and guest and dude ranches which give flavor of the West and rec reation galore. Formations Interesting Wildlife and geologic forma tions are interesting for explora tion, too, in this area. Such famous places as the Hart Moun tain Antelope Refuge near Lake view, the Malheur Wildlife Refu ge near Burns, several other refuge areas and lava and fossil beds are all situated for .maxi mum enjoyment In the Wallowa and Blue moun tains are other forest retreats and semi-areas where it's fun to be alive.. The Eagle Cap Wilder ness area south of Wailowa Lake is one of the few remaining prim itive areas in the nation. Within its boundaries are several peaks over io,ow feet in elevation, count less alpine lakes and beautiful white water streams. Other vaca tion areas are found at Spout Springs along uregon State High way ZU4 and tne Anthony Lakes region out of La Grande and Baker. Forest Camps Ready . South of the Wallowas, acces sible from Halfway and Pondosa, is the Eagle Creek forest area where forest camps are found to tempt the camper and explorer. This year boat trips are avail able through Hells Canyon from Robinette, Oregon, to Lewiston, Idaho, on the awesome Snake River. The Baker Chamber of Commerce is also sponsoring mo tor trips from Homestead, Ore gon to view the depths of Hells canyon from Sheep Rock and Red Ledge Mine. Arrangements for the boat trips and motor trips may be made by writing directly to the Baker Chamber of Com merce. Along the famous Columbia River Gorge, too ,are stopping places and sidetrips which make this trip a memorable one in any traveler's vacation log. A hiking trip up the Skyline Trail from Eagle Creek Forest Camp, east of Bonneville, where overnight camping is convenient and enjoy able, -is one of the pleasant ex periences in this area.
