She is Mrs. 'Joseph T. Cashore. William, an honor student, came through with the proper, spelling of "uncinated" and "transept." (AP Wirepboto.) Since World War H, the U. ' 14-Year Old Boy Wins National Spelling Bee WASHINGTON 11 ' William Cashore, 14, of Center Square, Pa., yho says he brushed up oh spelling whenever he could find the time, is the 1954 national spelling bee Winner. -- 4 ; ( .. To win the title, plus $500 and a trophy, Cashore spelled down 56 other school children from through out the nation in the 27th annual spelling bee Thursday. Runner-up was William Kelley, 11, of Deering, Mo. He tripped on "uncinated," speling K with an 'S" instead of a "C". The word means booked, or bent at the end. . Cashore soelled that word cor rectly and to cinch the title spelled jorrecliy en mare, "'ressepi. Two Airlines Check Port Facilities Here Representatives of both North west and Western Airlines were in Salem Thursday checking Salem's airport facilities to de termine if Portland bound planes of the two airlines could be handl ed here in event that airport was endangered by rising flood waters. The trio. J. Powers of Western Airlines, and Bill Watson, chief radio operator for Northwest Air lines and. C. Nelson also of that company, conferred with Airport Manager Charles Barclay and checked the aprons on the west side of the field and the facilities at the Administration Building. : All of the airlines brought their Portland flights into Salem in 1948, when the airport there .was under water. There is no certainty that the high waters will threaten the Portland airport this year and the critical stage is not expected until June 10-15. .
