French Can Win if They Hold Until Rains
Editor's Not French military
censorship in Indochina has pre
vented correspondents there from
filing eyewitness accounts of the
bitter fighting raging at the be
sieged French Union fortress of
Dien Bien Phu. Here is a report
from veteran of that epic strug
gle, a German just returned home
after release from the French For
eign Legion.
By ITRICH GRUDINSKI
FLENSBURG, Germany, laWI
see it this way, knowing the men
who are fighting for Gen, de Cas
triesif they can hold out until
the last of April or the first of
May, when the rainy season begins,
the French forces can win at Dien
Bien Phu."
That opinion of the bloody north
west Indochina battle was voiced
here today by Horsl Lemke. a
blond 2t-year-cJd German electri
cian. After five years in the French
Foreign Legion, he was among the
last to be flown out of the be
leaguered fortress where Brig.
Gen. Christian de Castries' out
numbered French Union troops
are battling legions of the Communist-lead
Vietminh rebels.
He left Dien Bien Phu March 7,

interview with a combat veteran
of the bitter, brutal battle.
"The fighting spirt of the French
Union troops is wonderful and the
men have a great and warm loyal
ty for Gen. de Castries," Lemke
said.
"They'd go through blazing fires
for him and they fight with bravery
and with confidence.
"You can't talk about fighting
spirit when you talk about the
Vietminh.
"They don't fight with loyalty;
they always looked to me like they
were blindly obedient machines, as
though somebody behind them was
forcing them forward mercilessly
to their death.
"They throw themselves at the
defenses wildly. Much of it's at
night. And it s bloody and vicious.
"There's lots of hand-to-hand
fighting and I mean close hand-
to-hand fighting.
' You can see your opponent's
eyes.
its seldom If ever that any
quarter is granted.
"Casualties are heavy. The Com
munists don't care about their
losses.
In ll, Lemke said, there were
then about 12,000 French Union
soldiers in the besieged garrison
when he left. Reliable sources in
