"crossing the line," or is on that part of its path, the ecliptic, where it crosses from the southern to the northern side of the celestial equator. But let's make it simp ler. It is the day when the south ern moon position of the sun is just half way between its lowest position in winter and its highest position in summer. The brilliant planet Venus passed the sun and arrived in the western twilight sky five weeks ago but it is still setting only about half an hour after sunset so is difficult to see. It will soon get into a better position. Mercury is at about the same distance west from old Sol in the dawn Skif' the sky is clear tonight, no tice the crescent moon in the west ern twilight. As always in March, it is a "dry moon," lying on its rounded side so as to "hold water." As soon as the sky has darkened somewhat, look for the splendid planet Jupiter a little southwest of overhead. It is somewhat dim med from its brilliance at the first of the year, but is still the bright est "star-like" object in. the heav ens. Through even small tele scopes, Jupiter's four larger moons present an interesting, sight. Yellow Saturn rises in the east southeast at around 11 p.m., and red Mars in almost the same di rection two hours later. For the brighter stars, distant suns, let us observe at 8 p.m. The splendid constellation of Orion, the Hunter, is now glorious, well up in the south-southwest. The three stars of equal brightness which form a conspicuous short, straight line are the belt of Orion. Higher and slightly left of these, the red and more brilliant Bctclgcuse shines in the hunter's shoulder; below and a little right, blue-white Kigel sparkles in his shoe buckle. Considerably lower and about due north, brilliant Sirius, in the Big Dog, scintillates beautifully. This star is excelled in brightness only by Jupiter and the moon. About east of Betclgcusc, we find Procyon in the Little Dog. Slightly west of the zenith and north of Jupiter, yellow Capella Jupier. yellow Capella twinkles ! twinkles. Note that the planet Jupiter docs not twinkle. Some what below Jupiter, we find or ange Aldcbaran in the V-shaper ' Hyadcs cluster. North of the Hy-; ades, the tiny dipper of the Pleiades is fascinating. High ip the cast-southeast, bright Rcgulus shines at the end of the handle of the Sickle. The curved blade of dimmer stars is north-; ward from Rcgulus and opens to- i ward the west. High in the north cast the familiar Big Dipper is standing on the end of its handle. In the northwest, the W of the Cassiopeia stars is easily traced. By VIC Attention, all kids 11 to 15!
