Fund Reaches
$228,121 Level
"The first matching money will
be available when $325,000 has
been subscribed," stated Presi
dent G. Herbert Smith in an
nouncing Wednesday that $228,
121 has been realized in connec
tion with $1,000,000 Willamette
University challenge fund.
"This means that $37,000 must
still be raised before any of the
funds will be made available from
two contingent gifts, amounting
to $500,000.
The fund will be used in the
construction of an auditorium
fine arts building and a women's
residence hall, plans for which
have been drawn.
A breakdown of the figures
shows that Salem has contributed
$140,726 and the Portland metro
politan area $83,905. Contribu
tions outside of the two metro
politan area total $59,940 and
Wilamette students have pledged
$3550 toward their goal of $10,
000. The first contingent gift of
$250,000 to the building fund was
anounccd in February when the
university program was authori
zed by the board of trustees. A
second gift, also equalling $250,
000 was disclosed in June.
When $650,000 is on hand,
President Smith believes the
trustees will be justified in pro
ceeding with the first two build
ings planned.
Gift of an Infirmary and health
center building to Willamette,
honoring the memory of Charles
P. and Fanny Kay Bishop, was
recently announced by the Bishop
family, prominent Oregon citizens
