be Miss Alvis Miller.
Her marriage to Elmer G.
Porter of Bend is to be solem
nized on Saturday, March 20, the
' afternoon ceremony to be at 4
o'clock in the First Methodist
church. The reception following
will be at the church.
Miss Miller is the daughter of
Mr.and Mrs. Howard F. Miller of
Salem and Mr. Porter is the son
- of Mr. and Mrs. John Porter of
Corvallis.

Crescendo Club
Next Sunday afternoon, in the
First Christian church parlors,
' the Crescendo club of Salem
high school will conduct its an
; nual formal induction. The in-
. duction will start at 3:00 p.m.
and will feature a program by
the members of the club. A re-
, ception will follow in the Fire
place room. All parents, friends,
and the interested public are in
vited to attend.
Wed 25 Years
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bren
tano of St Paul celebrated their
silver nnaiversary on Sunday,
January 24, with a reception at
the city hall in St. Paul.
There were 200 guests present
to greet the couple. Included
were their five children and
three grandchildren, also Mrs,
Brentano's mother, Mrs. Lucy
Niederbevger of Dundee, who is
bo years old.

afternoon for dessert and bridge,
at Salem Woman's club house. Wel

SUNDAY NIGHT SUPPER

Mixed Green Salad Rolls

California Ham and
Lima Casserole
Ingredients: 2 cups large dry
limas, salt, 1 large onion (chop
ped), 1 green pepper (chopped), 3
tablespoons bacon drippings or
other fat IV4 pound smoked ham
(diced), one Jounce can tomato
sauce, i cup cooking sherry, 2
tablespoons brown sugar, pepper
io uste, 1 clove garlic it desired
(minced).
Method: Rinse limas and cover
with cold water. Soak overnight
or Kir 0 10 a hours. Ilring slowly
to boil In soaking water. Boil
gently 30 minutes to 1 hour, just
until tender hut not niushv. Add
2 teaspoons salt toward end of
cooking. Drain beans thoronhly.
Cook onion and green pepper
gently in bacon drippings for 5
minutes. Add ham; cook, stirring
often, until ham begins to brown.
Add tomato sauce, shcrrv, brown
sugar, peprr and garlic; mix well.
Genaly stir in brans. Season with
salt to taste. Turn into 2-quart
cassrrole. Bake, uncovered, in
moderate (350 F.) oven 14 hours.
Makes 6 servings.

Murphys Home
Home from two months in the
south are Mr. and Mrs. Claude H.
Murphy. They spent the holiday
period in Pasadena with their son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs.
Cecil F. Crafts and daughter,
Christilee; and with their son, Ken
neth Murphy, who also lives at
Pasadena. While there, Mrs. Mur
phy was honor guest for a large
tea for which her dauhgtcr enter
tained. Also, in Pasadena, Mrs.
Murphy attended a large fashion
show at the Huntington Park ho
tel with her daughter.
After visiting at Pasadena, the
Murphys went on to Death Val
ley, stopping at Furnace Creek
and visiting Scotty's Castle. Later
they went to Las Vegas, Nev.,
stopping at the Flamingo hotel,
then on to Hoover dam and Parker
dam. While visiting in Phoenix
they saw Mrs. Mona Lindlcy. for
mer rcsnlent of Salem: and in
Tucson, visited with Mr.. Murphy's
brother. John Murphy. The Mur
phys also went to Mexican on a
trip and were at Snn Diego.
Both going and coming the Mur
phys visited with her sister, Mrs.
Minnie B. Fletcher at Fresno.

club has set March 17 as the date
for its annual spring luncheon and
style show at the IOOF hall. Tick-

One of the prettiest tea tables
seen in a long time was the one
arranged for the coffee parties.

Dwight Eisenhower, the Presi
dent's wife, with a group in

entertained to honor Mrs. Eisen
hower . . . Besides Mrs. Eisen

will sponsor a card party on
March 5 at the Woman's club
house. It was also voted to
sponsor a junior auxiliary con
ference in April.
The sewing club will meet
on Tuesday at the home of Mrs.
Charles Bower. On Thursday
the executive board will meet
with Mrs. Jerome Hansen.
On February 9 at the Izaak
Walton league club there will

tine dance, with Lyle Johnson's

Legion Auxiliary
Plans Polio Benefit
Mt. Angel The American Le
gion auxiliary plans a benefit auc
tion for the March of Dimes fund
at the next unit meeting, sched
uled for February 9. The auction,
previously scheduled for the last
Tuesday meeting, was postponed
due to the small attendance at the
meeting on account of the.Gonzaga
university Men's Glee "club pre
senting their concert here ths
same evening.
The unit wishes to make a worth
while contribution to the polio
fund, and every member is asked
to bring an article that may be
auctioned.
Mrs. Blanche Norton, clinic
chairman, reported that 18 little
children were examined at the
well child clinic, Tuesday after
noon, at the Legion Memorial
building. The examining physician
was Dr. W. J. Stone, county health
doctor. Mrs. R. T. Bisenius, auxil
iary president, assisted.
The Mount Angel Legion met the
same evening in their separate
quarters, with Commander Gene
Hoffer presiding and asking for a
good representation of local Le
gionnaires at the District 2 con
ference to be in Silverton, Sunday,
February 7. The commander, Ad
jutant Clarence Ebner, past dis
trict commander, Fred Lucht, Ira
Herriford, Ray Ruscher and Peter
Gores will attend, together with
other members.
