Dies in South
WEST LOS ANGELES (UP)
Dr. Eugene Chapman, 48, asslst
ant dean of the UCLA School of
Medicine and jusband of opvra
star Dorothy Kirsten, died at bis '
Belaire home here last night from
a kidney ailment contracted while
serving In the South Pacific during
World War II.
Chapman, who practiced medi
cine in San Antonio, Tex., before
marrying the beautiful opera star,
returned home only recently from
St. John's Hospital in Santa Mon
ica where he bad been undergoing
treatment.
Physicians at the hosDltal said
he contracted the kidney ailment
while servfng with the army's '
medical corps from 1934 to 1946,
when he retired with the rank of
colonel.
Chapman met Miss Kirsten in
San Antonio in 1949 when she went
there to appear in an opera. '

Moreland, 74, a resident l1 Linn
county since 1906, died at a local
nospitai Thursday.. The funeral
will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday '
at the United Presbyterian
church. Burial will be in the
Willamette Memorial park. Mr.
Moreland had lived in the Mill
ersburg district, on Albany RFD
2, where he had been identified
with community activities. Ho was
a native of Iowa, and married
Pearl Burrell at Clarinda, la., on
March 6, 1902. They came to this
community from Idaho. Surviv
ing are the widow, four children,
Clark, Tangent; Mrs. Floyd Fish
er and Donald Moreland, Albany
