the appointment was approved
by the district board of directors

for the board to employ a new
football coach.
Necessity for a full-time school
administrator at the union high
school, superintendent Fox ex
plained, arises from the fact that
when the senior high school and
ninth grade are combined as a
four-year high school in the new
building now in process of con
struction, the student body will
number not less than 1050.
Czech came to Albany in IMS
following his grsduation from
Oregon State college as line
coach under former Coach Rex
Hunsaker, .and succeeded Hun
saker when the latter went to
Klamath Falls to coach at the
Oregon Institute of Technology.
Bethel Names

BETHEL Elected as delegates
to the state convention of the
Oregon Farmers Union at the
January meeting) of Bethel local
were Jake Neufeidt and Walter
Baker. Alternates elected were
Ralph Wilson and Nile W. Hil-
born. The convention will be
held in the VFW Hall in Salem,
Feb. 11, 12 and 13.
Bethel local's newly elected
president. Warren Creech, con
ducted the meeting. It was
brought out that Creech served
four years as president when
Bethel local was organized 23
years ago. It was the second local
formed in Marion County. Central
Howell local being the first local
and Mt. Angel local was the third
organized.
Jack Wells, vice-president of
Buena Vista local, was the guest
speaker; giving a talk on his ex
periences in Bolivia in the inter
ior of S. A., as an international
exchange student. He showed a
collection of colored slides and
answered questions.
Mrs. James Laudcrback and
Mrs. Ralph Wilson were in charge
of serving. The budget meeting
will be held in February. There
will be mntion pictures and the
annual oyster supper.

ALBANYA. D. McClanahan
was bound over in district court
here on a forgery charge after
he had waived oreliminarv hear
ing. He is being detained in the
Linn county jail for lack of
$2000 bond. McClanahan is ac
cused of having forged the name
of Jack Carter to a $65 check
drawn on the Bank of Albany
and dated November 19, 1953.

LEBANON The city sew
age disposal plant is 70 per
cent complete, Mayor Elmer
Fitzgerald reported at the city
council meeting this week. It
may be in operation before
July 1, the original date set
for completion.
The announcement was mad;
in the mayor's review of civic
accomplishments during 1953.
The 70 per cent completion
mark included both primary
treatment plant and a second
contract for construction of -a
secondary filter unit.
The mayor stressed the po
lice department's safety pro
gram which has resulted in
three straight years without a
traffic fatality within the city.
He pointed out that mercury
vapor street lights have, re
placed the old type in nearly
all sections of the city. The
program 'will be completed
litis year, lie said.

LEBANON A course for
training Red Cross first aid in
structors will begin Monday
at the Lebanon high school, an
nounces John Simi, county first
aid chairman.
To be held five consecutive
evenings from 7:30 to 10:30
p.m., it will be open to any
qualified county resident. New
instructors must be the holder
of a current advanced first aid
card. Persons now qualified as

One project slated for action
last year, and still unfinished,
is the renumbering of homes
and renaming of several
streets. The mayor expressed
the need to complete It this
year since street signs at in
tersections are in poor condi
tion. Continuation of the street
program is planned. Request is
being made that all applica
tions be submitted to the
council before March 1, to al
low an earlier start on the
work.
Establishment of a sinking
fund over a period of three or
four years was suggested by
Kenneth Fuller, councilman.
He said the money would be
n! to old residents of "wneei-
er street from Grant street
north in paving the road. Hea
vy vehicles, including all log
ging truck, are required to use
this route which necessitates a
heavier roadway. He said resi
dents should not be required to
bear the extra expense.
A pledge for city aid in
park development was voiced
by Councilman Robert Heimer
dinger. He said that help was
needed in improving Riverside
park, a project sponsored by
the Kiwanians and the south
west recreation area on which
the Jaycees are spending time
and money.

Woodburn PTA
Gives Program
WOODBURN Sixteen men
of the Woodburn Parent-Teacher
association presented the pro
gram at the regular meeting
Tuesday night at the Washing
ton school which included an
humorous novelty skit of a cir
cus animal parade. Specialty
acts were presented by M. G.
Henderson and Dr. A. K. Guild.
Mrs. Ralph Pickering presid
ed over ' the business session
which followed the program.
Mra. Walter Taylor gave a re
port on the Marion county PTA
council meeting Dec. 9 at Moni
tor which she and Mrs. Picker
ing attended. In the report she
stated that volunteer workers
were requested by the council
from each unit in the county
to assist at the state convention
to be held at Salem In April.
A "mothers' singing chorus"
has beeen organized to be di
rected by . Mrs. Glen Ahre, the
first rehearsal to be Jan. 14 at
the Lincoln school at 2:30 in
the afternoon.'
The room count for the most
parents was won by Keith
Llewellyn's room.
The January board meeting
was announced for Jan. 21 at
the Elmer Witham home.

Given $100 Penalty
SWEET HUME Clyde
Wayne St. Clair, 38, Sweet
Home, was fined $100 for driv
ing while operators' license
was suspended and received a
jail sentence of two days on
the same charge. He was fined
an additional $10 for violation
of basic rule on a Municipal
court warrant, in Municipal
court with Judge Ed Russell
officiating.
Other fines collected at this
weeks sessions totaled $50.
