The registered pharmacists
or the capital Drug Store, lo-
eatea on one of the most im
portant corners In the heart of
the Salem . business district,
have been filling prescriptions
for the residents of this section
of Oregon since IBS. Prescrip
tion number one was written
by Dr. Robertson as of Msy,
1893, and filled by the pharma
cist employed by Brooks and
Legg, then the owners of the
Capital Drug Store. It was lo
cated at (hat time near the
Willamette river at 10O State
street. All prescriptions filled
by the pharmacists in this store
have been recorded and in the
event any patient, who might
desire a refill of a prescription
written 30 years ago, would
find it at Capital Drug store.
Last Thursday afternoon at
3:30 o'clock prescription num
ber 844,577 was filled by one
of the pharamacists employed
in the prescription department
of the Capital Drug Store. If
all unrecorded refills of pre
scriptions were accounted for,
it is estimated that m jre than
one million prescriptions have
been filled since the store was
founded.
Since the Capital Drug Store
was acquired through purchase
by J. H. Willett as of Dec. 3,
1924, it has been operated as a
drug store where the prescrip
tion department is the major
one. One may Judge the im
portance of this department
when it Is stated that 10 reg
istered pharmacists are regu
larly employed to fill prescrip
tions. This means, of course,
that the residents of Salem and
this immediate section of the
Willamette valley, have learn
ed of the reliability of this pre
scription department and as a
result give it outstanding pat
ronage. In other words, the
Capital Drug Store is recogniz
ed today as a professional
pharmacy.
The Capital Drug Store is
well departmentized and the
consumer goods in each depart
ment is attractively arranged.
As an example, only the high
est quality of nationally known
cosmetics are offered to the
customers. These include such
well known lines as Helena
Rubenstein, Dorothy Gray,
Herb Farm Shop Ltd., Marie
Earle, Alexander de Markoff
and others.
The girls, who are employed
in this department, have all
been trained in cosmetic
schools and, twice each year, a
refresher course in training is
given. This means that when a
customer inquires for a certain
cosmetic that will be adaptable
to her skin, the girl attendant
knows by training Just what to
recomment and the proper
method of application.
The perfumes and colognes
carried in stock st the Capital
Drug Store are all of the same
high standards of quality as
those found in the cosmetics.
Such national and international
known names as Guarlain,
Prince Matchabelli, Christian
Dior, Lentheric, Coty and Car
on, are engraved on the con
tainers in the perfumery de
partment of this store.

Incorporated In 1(4
In order to widen its scope of
operation, a corporation was
formed in 1949, as the Capital
Drug Store. J. H. Willett is
president, with Wayne W. Gor
don as secretary-treasurer and
general manager. Wayne Gor
don, like J. H. Willett, is a
registered pharmacist and has
been identified with the Cap- j
ital Drug Store for ten years.
He has built a host of friends
and customers for the Capital
Drug Store through his effici
ent and courteous manage
ment. J. H. Willett takes pride
in the way he has developed
the efficiency, integrity and en
viable reputation for the Cap
ital Drug Store in his almost
30 years of operating the store.
There are today 19 local peo
ple regularly employed in the
various departments of the
Capital Drug Store. The length
of permanent employment will
five to six years. All of the lo
cal people who are employed
are owners of their own homes
or are living in homes provided
by parents, and have identified
themselves with the cultural
and public service activities of
the city.
This is s Salem store that has
been built on service. This serv
ice includes a delivery car with
a courteous attendant and
prompt deliveries of merchan
dise will be made to any section
of the city. The store hours are
from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., everv
day except Sunday. The store is
open for emergency service on
Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

With the world's brow full of worry wrinkles and all of us praying for a
workable peace, the beloved old "Uncle" who symbolizes our nation be
comes the most important "relative" we can have! So let's pause, now
and then, in our busy preoccupations and silently thank God for the
strength of our government. Stephen Decatur said "right or wrong, this
is my coutnry." And the spirit of his loyalty lives on today as never before.
It may be that our statesmen are not always far visioned, but their sin
cerity is never questioned nor their motives impunged. United we stand,
the United States of America ... the land over which Uncle Sam is con
tinuously watchful!
