Portland's television station KPTV is beirinniir to elim
inate the Columbia Broadcasting System's programs from
their station. Most of the disbanding will take part the
latter part of September. No announcement has yet come
forth regarding the replacements. Portland's other TV
station Channel 6 will be on the air the middle of October
so the programs won't be long gone from your TV screens.

Carkin Retires
December 31st
John H. Carkin, superintend
ent of rail transportation for
the Oregon Public Utilities
Commissioner, will end his
long public service when he re
tires on December 31.
Carkin announced his retire
ment in a letter to Charles H.
Heltzel, commissioner, who
said that be had not determined
who would succeed Carkin. It
is possible thst Clifford W. Fer
guson, Carkln's assistant, may
be given the post
Haltzet praised the work of
Carkin in the department, say
ing Carkin's counsel haa been
"Invaluable" and the "state is
indebted to you tor the years labor in the 11
which you have served with for -.the army
honor and ability."
Carkin, 6i, a native of Ban-
gor; Me., was admitted to tne
bar In 190, was in private
practice in Medford for' 21
years, during which period he
served as city attorney of Medford.
From 111 to 192 Carkin
was a member of the Oregon
legislature end served as
speaker of, the bouse in 1927.
He was a member of the state
tax commission from 1929 to
1939.
Ferguson Joined the commis
sion staff a year ago, coming
from the Utah Public Utilities
commission. He wss western
representative of the Interstate
Commerce commission prior to
World War U and was chief of
western state
transportation
Corps.

Unfair Labor
Charge Filed
The second charge of unfair
labor practices has been filed
with the office of Division of
Labor Elections by the Lane
county Employers association.'
The complaint was In behalf
of Paul Bunyon Burger, a res
taurant operator, charging the
Culllnary Alliance Union, Local
643, Eugene, with picketing In
violation of the 1952 kxti-pick-,
eting law.
The first charge of unfair
labor practices under the new
law was filed about 10 days
sgo by Dwlght D. Bsttey, own
er of the Cave Shop restaurant
in Grants Pass.
Fred J. Sherer, labor elec
tions examiner, ssid Thursday,
that action on the first com
plaint would be made in the
next few days.
