Northwest championship in an
8 o'clock game sgainst Butte,
Mont., at Parker field in Yak
ima Sunday. Yakima and
Lewiiton, Idaho, claih In a 2
o'clock game Sunday.
Coach Vince Genna and his
Salem Legions earry a record
of 23 wins snd 0 losses with
them to Yskima. The 23 wins
were piled up during the regu
lar season play, exhibition
games, inter-district playoffs
and the stste tournament
The Yakima tournament runs
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday. Winner of the double-elimination
affair will en
ter the section D playoffs at
Hastings, Neb., beginning Aug
ust23. Salem went to Hsstings last
year, and won one game there
before being eliminated.
Genna has not named a start
ing pitcher for the game
against Butte Sunday. "It all
depends on which pitcher feels
the best after we get to Yak
ima," explains Genna. There
are four pitchers on the Salem
roster Gary Espe, Paul Beck,
Gary Paterson and Ed War-renburg.
Others players making the
trip to Yakime are catchers

state game commission reports
angling fair to good in most
of them, although it ia poor
in some, particularly in the
coastal area and the northern
Willamette valley.

area and on the McKenzie riv
er are fair to good and the
Willamette and tributaries
have been fair and the South
Santiam la fair to good.
In the southwest, salmon
fishing is fair at Winchester
Bay. Sea-run cutthroat fishing
is slow in the Vmpqua, Smith
and Sluslaw ' riven. Trout
fishing has been generally
slow, too. Streams In the up
per Umpqua are fair for trout
In central Oregon, the road
Is open to Three Creek Lake
and fishing is good. Sparks,
Blue, Odell and Todd lakes
have produced good catches.
Fishing also is good in Irish
and Taylor lakes, and on the
upper Deschutes river.
Catches have been excellent
In most lakes in the Wallowa
mountains, and good catches
hsve been reported from high
lakes In the Elkhorns. The Im
naha river fishing is good and
the Wallowa and Lostin riv
er have dropped and are
clearing. A few ateelhead have
been taken in the lower John
Day and Grand Ronde rivers.
