night, though he was nicked
for 11 hits. Salem batters got
at least one hit in every in
ning but te first. The Senators
left 12 men stranded on base.

Dale Dahle and fiob Collins.
Dable was charged with the
loss, his seventh of the season
gainst five wins.
Rios helped his own cause
with a home run in the third.
Herm Lewis also homered for
Yakima. His clout came in the

were with nobody on base.

A double win posted at Ed
monton Tuesday night while
Salem was losing a single game
to Yakima gave the Indians un
disputed possession of the top
berth. The Indians and Sena
tors, who have been chasing
each other In and out of first
rplacr through most of the sec
ond half of the split season,
were virtually tied for the lead
; at the start of the evening's activities-.
The Indians jumped on
two Mmonton pitchers for 12
hits as they fashioned a 8-1
triumph in the seven-inning
opener, and pounded out nine
more safeties to take the regulation-length
nightcap 4-2.
- Calgary took both ends of
a doableheader from Lewiston,
4-0 and 17-B. Manager-pitcher
Bill Brenner was the victim in
she second game, giving up 22
- hits, Including three round-
' trippers, to the Stampedera.
Don Hunter and Rocky Tedes
co homered for Calgary in the
first contest.
It took Wenatchee and Tri
City 12 innings to settle their
differences, with Trl-City win
ning 11-10. Ernie Hockaday
singled Len Trsn home with
the winning run in the 12th.

Merchants Win City League
Playoff With 7-C Victory
The Salem Merchants won
the City league play-offs last
night with a 7-0 win over the
Salem Used Car Dealers at
Phillip's field.
, Bob Knight snd Llod Jones
locked in a terrific pitching
duel for the first four innings
with Jones giving up two hits
and Knight three.
Then the roof fell in for
Jones as the Merchants slap
ped out seven hits and scored
six runs. Glen Blanton, Claude
Weaver, Ed Brandon, Fred
Graham, Tom Akers, and
Ralph Maddy all had singles
snd Don Vandevort a double
in the six run uprising.
The Merchants added one
more run In the seventh when
Blanton scored on an error and
several fielder's choices. The
winners formed a double play
in the second Inning with a
play from Vandevort to Mad
dy to Vandevort.
In the lone Industrial league
contest of the night the Postal
Clerks edged First Christian
5-4 in eight innings. Don Tor
geson scored the winning run
when he walked and then
scored on sn error.

cop the semifinal event of
the night and in the opener
Fred Jacque held Mr. Sakata
to a draw.
Matchmaker Elton Owen Is
trying to have the match with
Stojack postponed one week
and then the Marvel would

ruggedness, Matthews, tipping
the scales at about 182, sharp
ened his punching In an easier
drill.
The two fighters expected to

Among the team favoritea

D.C., and the Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., Swim Club. But 27 teams
in all are entered and com
petition for the overall title,
as well as Individual events, is
expected to be terrific. Two
