Salem Merchants Capture
First Playoff Game, 7-5
The Salem Merchants cap
tured the first game of' the
City league Softball play-offs
last night when they edged
the Salem Used Car associa
tion 7-5 at Phillip's field. A
win tonight would give the
title to the Merchants or a
loss would send the play-off
into a third game.
The Merchants tallied three
runs in the first inning on hits
by Blsnton and Knight and
two errors and two walks,
They added two more in the
second to take a 5-0 lead on
a triple by Payne, a double by
Vandevort, and an error.
Salem's Used Car Dealers
made it 5-1 with a single run
in the top of the third. Sherk
and Haugen each singled to
help out.
Vandevort homered ln the
fifth to give the Merchants a
five-run margin. While the
Merchants were getting one
run in the sixth the Used Car
Association was getting two in
each of the last two frames.
Micheela homered with one
on in the sixth while Moore

nual "All American" open at

Mangrum, never far off the
pace during the 72-hole event,
came through with a five un
der par 67 on the final round
for a total score of 275, six
over Byron Nelson's 1945 rec
ord, but 13 under par and
three strokes ahead of his near
est competitors.
Trailing him at 178, and each
earning $2,180, were Ted
Kroll, Utica, N. Y., and Sam
Snead, White Sulphur Springs,
W. Va.
Mangrum's victory yesterday
lifted him into first place in
the 1953 money winners of
golf with a total of $18,766.67
compared to $16,604.16 for Ben
Hogan, the earlier leader. !
Frank Stranahan, Toledo, O.,
won the men's amateur for the
sixth straight years with a fi
nal 70 for par 288 for 72 holes.
Patty Berg, Chicago,
matched par of 76 for a 308 to
tal to take the women's open
title for the third time, having

Tod Morgan died here Monday

50 years old.
Morgan was born Albert
