T I Route Signs For Emergency A lupply of emergency route Igns, to be erected at specific locations in Marion county fol lowing any large-scale disaster, were delivered Monday to Wal lace Wharton, county civil de tense director. The state civil defense agency has printed a detailed guide that shows where each sign is to be placed during an emergency, said Oscar Cutler of the engin eering and heavy rescue service. All local civil defense directors will receive strip-maps of their areas and instructions on erect ing the signs. This is part of a comprehen sive plan for controlling the movement of traffic during an emergency. Cutler said that hundreds of lives might depend on the ability to keep roads open, commenting that some nations that do not have one percent as many automobiles as America had some of the worst traffic jams in history during the recent war. Major state highways or pri mary roads have been desig nated in northwest Oregon for emergency vehicles only. Ac cording to technicians who de veloped the traffic control plan, the main concern would be keep ing inbound routes clear so that help can reach disaster scene - in the shortest possible time. Any organized evacuation, if re quired, would be handled on secondary, out-bound roads. Identification placards will be placed on windshields of trucks and cars not readily recognizable as emergency vehicles. This would get them through police blockades quickly.
