New Season Men's Wear Plays Up Color, Fabric, Natural Look fashion's Dlatform of well- styled apparel for men is one that will win votes from every aide! This Fall there's an unus ually smart line-up of candidates for election to a man's wardrobe. The leading favorite in the suit campaign is the two-button model, which is so flattering to every man. This style is being shown for Fall in a wide array of handsome fabrics, including plain gabardines, striped weaves and the important tweed group. There are interesting varia tions of styling in this two-button suit. It is equally smart tailored with large patch pock ets, the newer flap pockets, in cluding an extra change pocket just above the right hand pocket of the jacket, and the slit pock ets. Lapels vary slightly as to width. The lines of the jacket range from sharply-defined fit at the waistline to a more cas ual styling falling in a looser line from the shoulders. Runners-up, not to be over looked, are suits styled with three buttons and higher lapels and the well-tailored double- breasted model .which always ' polls a large number of votes. This season, the lapel of the double-breasted suit rolls smart ly to the lower button. In the coat field, early returns show that the Balmacaan is the favorite top-coat. Men like the easy fit of the raglan sleeves and the casual lines. Tweeds and novelty weaves seem favored. In overcoats, men are choos ing the double-breasted ulster model, particularly in heavy ' fleece, the trim fly-front over coat, and the handsomely tailor ed single-breasted coat with slash pockets. Men who appreciate style plus extra warmth in coats for more casual wear, vote strongly in favor of the storm coat. These are tailored of tweeds or plain fabrics that are treated to resist wind and rain. Many feature an interlining for extra comfort during cold weather. All storm coats are distinguished by a fur collar, mouton being the favorite. A new candidate for men's ap proval has appeared on the fash ion scene the surcoat. There are many variations of this cas ual style, which is jacket length. Many are made of weather-re sistant fabric with a fur collar. Others feature the plain collar and zipper front. In fall and winter clothing, the trend is away from weight. New fabrics, in their wonderful blends, are created to give warmth without weight, yet sac rifice no part of smoothfitting, good looks! The comfortable look is not only apparent in suits, sports wear and topcoats but alse in hats and men's furnishings. The smart hat is the narrow brim style with brims around two and half inches wide. The smart necktie is the narrow bow tie, or the neat distinctive four-in-hand cravats with panels, small patterns and spaced fig ures. Big news in topcoats is the trend toward tweedy fabrics. Herringbone patterns are espe cially good looking often styled in the English manner with rag lan shoulders. Zip-in linings make these tweeds go 'round- the-calendar, it : ; J f" ' " I - J Subdued Color; More Variety in Fall Neckwear Neckwear is more important than ever as the focal point of interest In men's outfits for fall. Coordinating the color and de sign of a necktie with a suit and shirt is the signpost to a well groomed appearance. In every case, the shade of the suit should be the key to the selection of the proper shirt and tie. If a suit is tailored of a tex tured woolen, such as checks or tweed, avoid small patterned ties. This combination tends to give the outfit a "busy" look. Choose instead, wide stripes, a plain color or a knitted tie. Small patterns, such as geo metric designs, polka dots, spac ed figures, or big, bold designs go well with the plain suit. If a shirt of the same color as the suit is worn, select a tie in a contrasting color. . When the color of the shirt is contrasted to the suit, key the tie color to the suit. The selection of handsome ties for this new season is unlimited -both in design and array of fabrics. ire. Brige in coi ls California lines, top favorite of or, deftly manipulated and the current silhouette picture, seems to be the wrapped waist line . . . particularly well-handled here, with Spanish influ ences to borrow from. In the Latin mood, too, Cali fornia designers use fringe for smartly tailored, California cor duroys are destined for going places this fall. Quilted fashions that swept across the fashion scene last spring and remained constant in popularity in California fash- Boys7 and Youths7 Styles Show 7Grown-Up7 Detailing In Fabric, Line and Color One point is outstanding throughout the fall showing of boys' apparent styles for boys are keeping pace with men's fashions. Boys love "just-like-Dad's" clothes and this year both Dad's and son's fashions ' are appearing simultaneously. As in the men's field the two button suit is the top favorite. It is easy fitting, comfortable to wear and styled in a wide range of good-looking woolens. Tweed is the favorite and is being shown in many hand some weaves. Often this tweed suit is sold with an extra pair of plain color gabardine slacks to give a boy two smart outfits. Double-breasted suits are a smart choice for dress-up wear. These are shown In dark-toned woolens, gabardines and flan , nels predominately. Again, tweed is rated high for topcoats. The single - breasted casual coat is foremost and usually features a zip-in lining for extra warmth. Doing double duty in boy's wardrobes are the topcoats which are treated to be waterproof and csn be worn as a raincoat. Corduroy is favored for extra slacks because of its rugged, long - wearing quality. Boys' slacks are tailored of both plain and patterned corduroy with the peg-bottom style making a big hit with boys all over the country. Corduroy jackets are as pop '. ular as ever and are usually shown in plain colors. Sport shirts, too, are being featured in printed, striped, and checked corduroy and show signs of being well-received by : boys for school wear. Cotton flannelette in dark - tone plaids is a smart choice for sport shirts. It s warm, washable, and good-looking. Denim still ranks as a big favorite for slacks and tiie newest style to appear is flannel- lined dungarees. These promise to be a big fashion, with boys. Boys' sweaters for Fall, '52 are gayer than ever taking their cue from the styles for ski wear. They are usually shown in a combination of colors in crew, turtle, V-neck styles, as well as the coat sweater. Jackets are making big news In boys' togs particularly the surcoat. This longer - style jacket often features a mouton or sheepskin collar and it's tops for knockabout wear. Both belted and straight-line models are shown. Reversible jackets and coats are big favorites in boys' Fall wardrobes. These are styled with one side of water-repellent gabardine and the other of deep piled woolen, " Fall Style Notes , Clothing continues to "make the man" but with modified pad ding and artful shaping fol lowing the natural line of his shoulders and slenderizing his waist and hips. re A smart casual .ensemble for fall: all-wool tweed sports jacket in three-button style, gray flannel slacks, and all wool tweed cap. Rounding out the men's fash ion picture for Fall are good looking accessory touches to add zest to outfits. There are colorful sweaters that are styled, and worn, as vests. Casual jackets appear in a gal axy of styles, including quilted-ed-lined styles, fur-collared sur coats, zip-front jackets of wea ther-resistant fabric with warm fur collars and ribbed waist bands, and fleece lined models. Shirts call upon new fabrics, rather than styling, to create Fall, '52 news. Foremost a r Dacron, Orion, and other syn thetic fabrics. Dacron is strong, crease-resistant, quick-drying, and needs lit tle or no ironing. Orion is another "miracle fab ric" being used in shirts. Orion is warm, washable, and resists fading. Cotton appears in men s Fall sports shirts in a heavy cotton flannelette. This warm, yet washable, fabric is shown in a whole range of smart deep-toned i plaids in shirts for rugged sports I wear. These shirts News in Hats for Fall-lnto-Winter Men's hats for Fall are styled with an easy, natural look to harmonize with the more casual air of the leading styles. Well-mated to the comfort able appearance of the fashion leaders, the popular two-button suit and Balmacaan topcoat, is the Fall felt with a narrow snap brim. Bands are narrower and crowns remain lower tor tne smart understated appearance. dramatic effect, and use the ion circles all summer long, feature knitted cuffs and waist band, usually in a contrasting color. Well-tailored slacks made of fabric treated to resist spots are destined to be favored items in men's Fall wardrobes. Sport coats are particularly smart in richly-textured tweeds. Rib bings, soft sleeves, the use of wool jersey or cashmere, all contribute to the sweater-skirt feel. California takes a costume approach to the fashion with return to some extent in dressy-1 versions for Fall. Quilted taf fetas, quilted effects on velvet and velveteen are being seen in some collections. Velvets and velveteens, felts, metallic fabrics are pointed up for starring roles in the dressy separates picture. Topped with camisole tops, sweetheart neck line blouses, and novelty top pers, these skirts wing into Cali fornia's fashion scene, with gay abandon in dressy and casual styles. Halter-neckline dresses with matching or contrasting little jackets are treated with an ele gant air, and lavish trims. Black combines with white or high color, such as coral, emer ald, golds and burnishing tones for daytime wear. On the scene for evening is lots of black, and "black-wlth" jewel and vint ner colors are spotlighted. Cords and velveteens, velvets, wools and men s wear rayons apparent that color is all set to steal the show. This does not necessarily mean bright color, but color as opposed to the domi nance of black. This season black mixes into color so that "black ened colors" are real news.
