Mil ler of Yamhill and Miss Carol Maddlx of Rainier, spent Sat urday afternoon in Aurora. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Moul ton of Portland were recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Askin. Walter Aldrich will be the North Marlon union high school coach this coming year. Aldrich was coach at Napa vlne, Wash., last year. At North Marion he will coach football and track and assist in basket ball. Mr. and Mrs. Aldrich and their two children will take up residence at Butteville very shortly. Registration for the North Marion students will 'be held Thursday and Friday, Sept. 4 and 9. School will begin Mon day, Sept. 8, with a full day of classes, according to Pat Beal, superintendent. Plans are being formulated by the Women's Association of the Aurora Presbyterian church to make two wool quilts for the Alaska mission. Also a committee was appointed to purchase new drapes for the church. Butteville workers manning the Aurora observation post Thursday were Mrs. William Gooding, Mrs. Glenn A. Yergen, Mrs. W. O. Lindquist, Mrs. Don ald Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Murray, Mrs. William Dentel, L. Glenn Yergen, Edwin Miller and Philip Yergen. Seely Clan Reunion Woodburn Descendants of Lucius and Sophie Seely, early Oregon pioneers, will meet for the second annual reunion and picnic Sunday, August 17, at Champoeg park. The potluck picnic dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. and members are asked to bring their own table service. Coffee will be fur nished. Cafe Closes Two Weeks Woodburn Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carter, owners and opera tors of the Coney Island restau rant at Woodburn, have an nounced that the restaurant will be closed for two weeks, be ginning Aug. 18. They will re open It Sept. 2. Almost 200 tons of coal are re quired to make the aluminum that goes into a B-38 bomber. Eighty pounds of oil per acre was distilled from the first five acres and the remainder went 75 pounds to the acre. Mrs. John Kins, Linda and David, Miss Deloris Meyers, Gladys and Carrie Hatmaker, Miss Bonnie Camnhell. Carmen Kins, Junior Campbell, Frank wens and Garry Gray attended the camp meeting at Jennings Lodge. V. B. Vallick left Thursday for Breitenbush and Mr. and Mrs. Les Shields left Friday morning for Breitenbush. They plan to return Tuesday. Mann were Just starting out for the evening Saturday about 9 p.m. when the steering gear of their car failed and the car crashed into the rear of a parked truck near the Berkey garage, dam aging the radiator, fenders, hood, etc. The truck, register ed to R. Hildebrand of Hubbard was apparently undamaged. No one was Injured. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bowman and two daughters of Bakers field, Calif., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Rose, Wednes day of last week. On Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wolf of Ba- kersf ield were guests of the Roses. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Keller returned from a vacation In California last week bringing their grandson. Art Gardner, with them. Later in the week Art's two brothers, Dennis and Larry, flew up from Loa An geles with their father and the three boys will spend about two weeks here. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Gardner of Los Angeles. Clear Lake Mr. and Mrs. Merldlth Mills announce the birth of a daugh ter, Kristin Kay, born July 28. The baby, who weighed 8 lbs. 4 oi., has two sisters, Sharon and Kathy, and a brother, Michael. Mr. and Mra. Howard Schlag are the parents of a boy. Their first child has been named Stephen Glen and weighed 7 lbs 10 oz. Coal-carrying self unloading lake vessels can discharge their cargoes at the rate of 1,100 tons per hour. Ed Keith Oliver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Oliver, is hospitalized at the Salem Me morial hospital following an ac cident Monday of last week. Oliver who was spending his furlough, from his station at Fort Lewis, at the home of his parents, was thrown from a cat he was driving, which went out of control and rolled 150 feet down a hill in Turner. He sus tained six broken ribs, numer ous cuts and bruises it is report ed. He will be removed to an army hospital as soon has his physician deems it advisable. Ellen and Roberta Chance, Juanita and Aloha Thomas, members of the Pioneer Girl Scout troop No. 52, took a four day hike along the Sky Line trail in the Jefferson primitive area last week. The girls were accompanied by their leader and co-leader, Mrs. Walter Thomaa and Mrs.. Edward Chance. Mr. Tbemaa drove the party to within one mile of Pa melia lake trail. House guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tex Allen the past week were Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Whaley of Spokane, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. George Bailev. and son Lee, vacationed at the beach the last week, returning home Sunday evening. Raymond (Pete) Smith who has been seriously ill and hos pitalized in Salem, was brought home Thursday of last week, much improved. Mrs. W. F. Struckmeier soent the week in Vancouver, Wash., where she joined her mother. who had arrived In the states from her home in Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hearing and two children drove to The Dalles for the week. Hearing operates the Gates barber shop. I The Gosnels were enroute to their home in Roseburg follow ing a months visit with relatives in the Carolinas and New Mexi co. Harold C. Bayley of Portland was a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Millsap the last of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Oliver have received word that their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Oliver of Corvallis are visiting in New York City and other eastern places of interest. The trip is in the nature of a belated honeymoon for the couple who were married this spring. They will also visit at the home of his sister and hus band, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Smith (Jean Oliver) In Vir ginia. They are making the trip by air. Former friends of Virgil Heath may be interested to learn that his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Heath, have re ceived word of his transfer from Anchorage, Alaska, to San Francisco, where he and his family will reside. Heath has been In government employ in Alaska for a number of years. Mrs. Mabel Warmeth from Santa Rosa, Calif., and her sis ter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kaylor of Molalla and daughter, Margaret Jane, were week-end guests at the Burrel Cole home. Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Turnidge and daughter, Carolyn, of Cut ler City visited her mother, Mrs. Chris Knutson, the last of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Verner Evans and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Martig and family left Thursday morning for Gold Beach. After spending a short vacation there the Evans con tinued on the Prescott, Ariz., for a months' visit there with her parents. Phone Detroit til 95c Silverton Parks Attract Weekend Family Reunions Silverton The 100th anni versary of the arrival of the White clan was observed in re union at Coolidge and McClaine Silverton city park, Sunday. Descendants of the four chil dren of Virginia Q. (Foster) White a tended the reunion. Her husband, Peter White, died while cross in g the plains and was buried at Fort Laramie. Mrs. White, 30 years of age, was left with four children, the oldest only 7 years of age. Mrs. White homesteaded in the au tumn of 1852, seven miles north of Silverton, the property is still in the family name with the residents, the family of Gasner White, son of John Rob ert White who was the son of Virginia Q. White. Her other three children were Marion Jackson White, who never mar ried: America Q. Ross and Elizabeth Jane Gleason. It is believed by the members of the clan that Mrs. White was born in Missouri, May 2, 1813, her parents having previously lived in Kentucky and Illinois. Honoring Mrs. Virginia Q. White was a large picture en larged and appropriately framed, draped by a hand woven blue and white counter pane woven by Mrs. White, and brought across the plains. The central decorative theme of the dinner table was a huge brass vase of many colored gladio luses from the Harvey Hallett gardens. Among other remembrances of the honored woman on dis play was her Christian church letter of transfer from Mis souri, a vanity case, a snuff box and an unique nut cracker. Read to the guests present was a letter of greeting from Merle Briggs, nd of Lulu White-Briggs. who is the oldest great-grandson of Mrs. White. He was born on the White home stead, and : now a member of the high school teachers faculty of Analy Union high in Sebas- topal, Calif. . Two four-generation groups were among the guests. Sunday. These were Gasner White, Ruth nell and daughter, Nadine, all from Long Beach, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Don Miley recently returned from Salem where he was attending summer school at Willamette university. At the Warren Varcoe home over the week-end were her mother, Mrs. Rose Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bach and Joe Marriage, all from Portland. Mrs. Gwen Schaer and Mrs. A. T. Barnhardt, teachers in the local grade school, returned Friday from Monmouth where they had attended summer school for the past six weeks. Billie Mills of Newport has been at the home of his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kelle for the past two weeks. Mrs. Marshall Lake of Port land spent Saturday and Sun day at the home of her grand-mother-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Lake. Mrs. Marshall Lake is employed in Portland while her husband is with the armed forces In Ko rea. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ambers have returned to Gates from Medford and are again operat ing the Maples tavern on the highway east of Gates. Amos Beugli is the retiring president. Elected vice-president was Lloyd Schumacher of Sweet Home. The retiring vice president is Wayne Schumacher of Molalla; secretary-treasurer for the coming year will be Walter Beer of Portland, with Mrs. George Kirk of Silverton, retiring secretary-treasurer. Guests attending Sunday came from Victoria, B.C., Longview, Wash., Sweet Home, Portland, Molalla, Canby, Woodburn, Ore gon City, Silverton and Hub bard. Members of the Beugli clan met in honor of David Beugli and Elizabeth Zuercher Beugli, who were married in Switzer land and migrated to the United States in 1876, locating in Son nenberg, Ohio. Mrs. Beugli died there two years later. David Beugli came to Oregon in 1880 and died here in 1883, being buried in Silverton cemetery. The first organized reunion of relatives was in 1938, held in the local city park as have been the succeeding sessions. Nebraska Club Picnic Fifty members of the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska) club met at Coolidge and McClaine park Sunday for their annual picnic with a no-host dinner served' in the afternoon. A contest and game program was planned with prizes award ed. Many took advantage of the municipal swimming pool, and the old time swlmmin' holes of Silver Creek during the day. Gordon Gilbert was elected president and Mrs. Charles Bas cue, secretary, of the club for the coming year. North Dakota Meeting For the 8th annual reunion the former residents of Benson county, N.D., met at Coolidge and McClaine park Sunday with around 125 present.
