The bill potentially affects millions of divorced persons whose decrees could be consider ed valid in one state but not in another. The measure now goes to the House. The measure, sponsored by Sen. Pat McCarran, D.-Nev., re quires that any legal divorce "must be given full faith and credit" in any ether state if it meets the following standards: 1. The decree is final. 2. The decree is valid. 3. The decree declares that jurisdictional requirements of the state granting the divorce have been met. 4. "The state in which the de cree was granted was the last state in which the couple lived together as man and wife, or the defendant was personally sub ject to the state's jurisdiction or appeared generally in the pro ceedings." Molesters to Get the Book Municipal Court Judge Doug- las Hay, who Friday sentenced J. J. Jackson of Brooks to $35 fine on a disorderly conduct charge, Indicated he was going to continue to "be tough" on similar cases. Jackson was found guilty of molesting a teen-age girl in a Salem theatre. The police department says there has been too much of this type of disturbance of late. Judge Hay said he's going to hand out the maximum sentence under the law to anyone con victed of such molestation. Witfer Named as Denial Director Portland u.R Appointment of Dr. David M. Witter as full time director of the dental heal th section of the state board of health was announced Saturday. The position has been filled on a part-time basis by the di rector of the preventive medical services division since Decem ber, 1949, when Dr. P. Paul Davis resigned to enter private practice in Parkrose. Dr. Witter has been serving as director of the South Dakota health department, division of dental health, and holds the doc tor of dental science degree from the University of Nebraska as well as the master of public health degree from the Univer sity of Michigan. Roger Carstenson, Phillips University, Enid, Okla., former Oregon minister and a profes sor at Northwest Christian Col lege, will conduct daily Bible classes. Participating from Salem will be Donald Payne, minister of Christian education at the First Christian church, who will mod erate a training class in Chris tian education each afternoon, and Harold H. Lester Webber Dies, Services Next Tuesday Lester Webber, for many years an employe of Marlon county as a member of bridge maintenance crews and a resi dent of 4178 Portland Road, died in a Salem hospital Fri day after an illness of several months. Webber came to Oregon 39 years ago from Aurora, 111. He is survived by the widow, Bal aria Grace and two brothers, Sam Webber of Lebanon and Roy Webber of Manhattan Beach. Webber was a long - time member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Funeral services will be held at the Clough-Barrick chapel at 11 a.m. June 24 with interment in Belcrest Memorial park. Now, then, you 134 guys, get those bugs builtt Potato Prices Leveling Off Washington A levelling of of booming potato prices has brought a sharp drop in the government s wholesale price index. It fell four-tenths of one per cent during the week which ended June 17. The Bureau of Labor Statis tics index stood at 111.2 per cent of the 1947-49 average. That was 3.3 per cent under January, 1951, when wage and price controls went into effect. Potato prices jumped sky ward when controls were re moved two weeks ago In an effort to meet a potato short age. But in the week ending June 17, the government re ported Friday, prices fell ai much as 42 per cent in some localities. There also were price drops in livestock, poultry, meats, eggs and hides. On the up-slde were some fresh fruits and veg etables, manufactured animal feeds, inedible fats and oils and some textiles. State Civil Service Tests Monday Night To alleviate a critical person nel shortage at two state insti tutions the state civil service commission will conduct exam inations Monday night at 7 o'clock. Tests will be given to appli cants for correcitonal officer po sitions at Oregon State peniten tiary. Applicants should be high school graduates and between 21 and 45. The starting salary is $250 a month. The commission Is also seek ing applications for hospital aide positions at Oregon State Psychiatric hospital. Both men and women may apply and the starting pay is $193 a month. Application forms may be ob tained at the commission office.
